Wolverines Ready for Fall Tourneys

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan softball team has announced its 2003 Fall Tournament schedule as part of its fall schedule. The Wolverines will participate in the eighth annual Elk Rapids Collegiate Softball Tournament in Elk Rapids, Mich., on Sept. 20-21, two weeks before hosting the Michigan Softball Fall Invitational on Oct. 4-5, at Alumni Field.
The four-team field at Elk Rapids consists of Michigan, Michigan State, Western Michigan and Central Michigan, with all four teams facing one another in a round-robin format on Sept. 20. The first-place team faces the fourth-place team, while the second and third-place squads square off in semifinal action on Sept. 21. Championship and consolation games immediately follow the semifinals. The Wolverines then conclude their fall season by hosting Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan and Oakland for the Michigan Softball Fall Invitational. See schedules for both tournaments below.
The fall tournaments provide Michigan softball fans with their first opportunity to see some of the newest Michigan freshman such as pitcher-utility player Lorilyn Wilson (Salem, Ore./Sprague HS) and catcher-first baseman Tiffany Worthy (Yorba Linda, Calif./Lutheran HS).
Key returnees for the Wolverines include two-time All-Big Ten pitcher Nicole Motycka (Sarasota, Fla./Cardinal Mooney HS) along with 2002 All-Great Lakes Region first-team performers such as junior Jessica Merchant (Wayland, Mich./Wayland HS) at shortstop, senior Monica Schock (Rialto, Calif./Eisenhower HS) at catcher and senior Meghan Doe (Tucson, Ariz./Sabino HS) in centerfield.
