Four-Goal Outburst Produces First Michigan Win of 2003

MADISON, Wis. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team earned its first victory of the 2003 season with a commanding 4-2 win over Iowa State Sunday afternoon (Sept. 14) in the Rocky Rococo Wisconsin Invitational at the McClimon Soccer Complex. The Wolverines (1-3-2) scored three unanswered goals in the first half and added another midway through the second to secure their first win in six tries this year.
The U-M offense got going early on, with freshman Katelin Spencer (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) passing the ball upfield to sophomore Therese Heaton (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South HS), who was able to get behind the defense and put the ball past Iowa State goalkeeper Beth Chapman for Michigan's first goal. Nine minutes later, junior Robyn Vince (Holt, Mich./Holt HS) took one of U-M's six first-half corner kicks and sent it toward freshman Whitney Kjar (Sandy, Utah/Skyline HS), who collected the ball and scored her first career goal.
Michigan's defense continued its solid play in the middle of the half, enabling the offense to keep the ball on ISU's end. With nearly four minutes remaining until the break, senior Stephanie Chavez (Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood HS) flicked a corner kick from Vince to junior Kate Morgan (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty HS), who headed the ball from 10 yards out past Chapman to increase the Wolverine lead to 3-0 heading into halftime.
The Wolverines scored their final goal of the game at 66:18 of the second half, as freshman Judy Coffman (San Jose, Calif./Santa Theresa HS) raced down the left side of the field and made a nice cross to Chavez, who sent the ball to the back post to give Michigan the four-goal advantage.
Michigan's defense sputtered a bit toward the end of the contest, as the Cyclones (2-2-1) scored two quick goals in a span of two minutes. Jess Villhauer scored at 74:42 from Kristina Baumann and Kate Kirwin, and Deb Benakis cut the deficit to two goals with her score from Baumann at 76:24. That was as close as ISU got, as the Michigan defense was able to reorganize and run out the clock.
The Maize and Blue dominated the offensive charts, finishing the game with a 22-8 advantage on shots and an 11-3 edge on corner kicks. Freshman Megan Tuura (Tucker, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic HS) and senior Suzie Grech (Narberth, Pa./The Shipley School) split time in net, with Tuura making two saves in the first half and Grech allowing both Iowa State goals in the second frame.
Michigan will next travel to Champaign, Ill., to begin its Big Ten Conference schedule against Illinois on Friday (Sept. 19). The match is slated for a 7 p.m. CDT start at the Illinois Soccer Stadium.
