SALT LAKE CITY, Utah -- The No. 17-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision to Utah Sunday afternoon (Aug. 31) in front of 1,103 fans at Ute Soccer Field. Junior forward Kate Morgan (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty HS) scored U-M's lone goal in the second half, with freshman midfielder Katelin Spencer (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) assisting on the play.
The Utes (2-0-0) came out in the first half and took control on the offensive end, as their first two goals came off corner kicks. Utah earned its first goal of the game at 22:13 when Amanda Feight sent the kick to Lauren Field, who got her head on the ball in front of the goal and sent it over U-M goalkeeper Suzie Grech (Narberth, Pa./The Shipley School) and into the upper right corner. Ten minutes later, Utah found itself with another corner kick, and Carrise Winegar located Melissa Wayman in front again for another header to put the Utes up 2-0. Amber Brower capped off the first-half scoring, taking a pass from Tracy Stratton and finding the back of the net from five yards out to give Utah a three-goal advantage.
Utah's fourth and final goal came just over two minutes into the second half, with Winegar scoring from the right side of the endline. The Wolverine offense picked up the pace midway through the second half, as Morgan took a pass from Spencer at the top of the six-yard box, one-touched, turned and put the ball in the lower right corner past Utah goalie Ashley Mason.
Grech was credited with one save on the day, while Mason made four stops for the Utes. Although Utah outscored the Wolverines by three goals, the shot totals were just about even (Michigan 9, Utah 10).
The Wolverines (0-1-1) return to Ann Arbor for their home opener against Oakland on Friday (Sept. 5). The match, which is one of four featured in the Nike Challenge (Sept. 5-7), is scheduled for 4 p.m. at U-M Soccer Field.

On the game ... "Unfortunately, there were not a lot of positive things that came out of this game. We started the match on our heels and were on the defensive the entire time. We made a lot of silly mistakes and didn't get going until midway through the second half. The big difference in the game was on the physical side. Utah played a lot more aggressively and we got beat to the ball all over the field."
