BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Senior Anthony Jackson (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet HS) and junior Vinny Gossain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) of the University of Michigan men's tennis team traveled to the Indiana University campus Aug. 9-12 to participate in the 2003 ITA National Summer Championships. Jackson and Gossain both competed in the 64-player singles main draw and paired together for the 32-team doubles main draw.
Jackson, U-M's No. 2 singles player last season, dominated Evansville's Michael Baugh in the first round, cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 victory to advance. Jackson had a tougher opponent in the second round, battling his way to a 7-6, 7-6 win over Princeton's Hans Plukas. Virginia's Rylan Rizza prevented Jackson from moving on to the quarterfinal round, winning 6-4, 6-2.
Gossain, who played mostly at No. 6 for the Wolverines last year, fell to LSU's Bryan Fisher 7-6, 4-6, 1-0(8) in the first round but rebounded to win two straight matches in the consolation bracket. Gossain defeated Ben Johnson of Birmingham College 6-1, 2-6, 1-0(6) and Kalamazoo College's David Atallah 6-3, 6-0.
Jackson and Gossain split a pair of matches in doubles, defeating Duke's Chris Brown and Western Michigan's Thomas Dennis 8-6 before losing 8-5 to Ohio State's Scott Green and Ross Wilson.
