Anving Caps U-M Comeback Victory Over Indiana State

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's tennis player David Anving (Tvaaker, Sweden/Varbergs Gymnasieskola) clinched the Wolverines' 4-3 comeback win against Indiana State Tuesday (April 8) at the Varsity Tennis Center, outlasting David O'Connell 6-4, 7-5 at No. 4 singles. U-M (7-10, 1-5 Big Ten) lost a close doubles point and was down 3-1 in the match before pulling out three straight victories in singles to claim the win against the No. 67-ranked Sycamores (9-9) and give head coach Mark Mees his 50th U-M win.

Anving closed out his win by serving up a pair of aces.

ISU started things off with a win at No. 2 in doubles, as Vedran Vidovic and Lovre Brajkovic overtook seniors Chris Shaya (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Saddlebrook Academy, Fla.) and Chris Rolf (Midland, Mich./Midland HS) 8-6. Ionut Hurduc and Dmytro Ishtuganov secured the team point for ISU with a 9-8(2) win over Anving and fellow sophomore Vinny Gossain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) at No. 3. Junior Anthony Jackson (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet HS) and sophomore Michael Rubin (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic HS) were trailing 7-5 in their match at No. 1 but could not complete the comeback, eventually falling in a tiebreaker to Henry Choi and O'Connell 9-8(5).

The Sycamores increased their lead to 2-0 at the start of singles as Brajkovic posted a quick 6-3, 6-2 win over Shaya at No. 2. After Rubin cut the lead to one with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Vidovic at the top spot, Ishtuganov made the score 3-1 in favor of ISU with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over sophomore Josef Fischer (Nuremberg, Germany/Bradenton Academy, Fla.) at No. 5.

That was Indiana State's final point of the day, however, as the Wolverines claimed victories in the three remaining singles matches. Gossain tallied a 6-2, 6-3 win over Hurduc at No. 3, while Jackson continued the momentum with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win over Choi at No. 2 to tie things up at three apiece. Moments later, Anving served up two straight aces to close out O'Connell and send Michigan to its second win in as many tries.

The Wolverines returns to Big Ten action with two road matches this weekend, traveling to Purdue on Saturday (April 12, noon EST/CDT) in West Lafayette, Ind., before facing top-ranked Illinois on Sunday (April 13, noon CDT) in Champaign, Ill.
