Anving's Singles Victory Decides Match vs. Northwestern

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's tennis player David Anving (Tvaaker, Sweden/Varbergs Gymnasieskola) clinched the Wolverines' 4-3 victory over No. 52-ranked Northwestern Saturday afternoon (April 19) at the Varsity Tennis Center, defeating Chuck Perrin 7-6(7), 2-6, 6-2 at No. 4. Michigan (8-12, 2-7 Big Ten) gave up the doubles point to begin the match but regrouped to win four of six in singles to claim the win.
The Wildcats (10-11, 3-7 Big Ten) gained the early advantage with a win at No. 1 doubles, as Tommy Hanus and Perrin overtook senior Chris Rolf (Midland, Mich./Midland HS) and sophomore Vinny Gossain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) 8-3. Adam Schaechterle and Jackie Jenkins clinched the doubles point with an 8-6 win over junior Anthony Jackson (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet HS) and sophomore Josef Fischer (Nuremberg, Germany/Bradenton Academy, Fla.) at No. 3. Senior Chris Shaya (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Saddlebrook Academy, Fla.) and sophomore Michael Rubin (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic HS) provided Michigan with its lone win in doubles, an 8-6 triumph over Russell Bennet and Josh Axler at No. 2.
Jackson evened the scored at 1-1 with an easy 6-1, 6-1 win over Jenkins to begin singles play. Moments later, Rubin closed out Hanus 6-1, 6-2 to give the Wolverines the one-point advantage. Northwestern responded with two straight victories to take a 3-2 lead in the match, as Axler posted a 6-4, 6-0 win over Shaya at No. 3 and Gossain fell to Ahmed Wahla 6-3, 7-5 at No. 6. Fischer evened things at three apiece with a comeback victory over Schaechterle at No. 5 (4-6, 6-1, 6-2) and set the stage for Anving's match-clinching win over Perrin at No. 4.
The No. 60-ranked Wolverines will close out the regular season tomorrow afternoon (Sunday, April 20) at the Varsity Tennis Center, hosting Wisconsin at noon. It will be the final home match for U-M seniors Rolf and Shaya.
