ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Julie Nisbet's (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara HS) 100th career goal proved to be the game-winner in overtime as the No. 13 University of Michigan water polo team battled back from a 5-1 halftime deficit to defeat No. 12 Indiana 9-7 Saturday night (March 8) at Canham Natatorium. The win completed the Wolverines' two-game sweep on the day as they easily handled Grove City, 18-2, in the morning contest on the first weekend of CWPA Southern Division play.
| Against Indiana Nisbet's 100th career marker turned out to be the game-winner. |
In the first quarter against IU, Michigan (8-8, 2-0 CWPA) had the best opportunities early as it garnered two power plays in the opening two and a half minutes. However, Indiana opened the scoring with a goal from Kristin Stanford from the two-meter position at 1:49. Nisbet responded with three seconds left in the period as she fought off her defender to score a layout goal and tie the game at 1-1.
The Hoosiers (11-5, 2-1 CWPA) scored four unanswered goals in the second quarter and held U-M scoreless. Stanford notched her second goal at 5:37 and another IU marker came at 3:37 as a result of a skip shot. Nisbet nearly scored on a backhand shot one minute later, but IU goalie Jessica Goldner stopped the upper-corner attempt. Indiana earned its next two goals 30 seconds apart at 1:18 and 0:48 to take a 5-1 halftime lead.
The Wolverines showed their resiliency by scoring 21 seconds into the third quarter. Casey Kerney (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park HS) stole the ball at mid-pool, moved in on a breakaway and fired the ball past the goalie. Michigan continued its rally at 5:19 when Delia Sonda (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) took a feed from Narsai at the right side and aimed high over the keeper for a power-play goal.
Indiana temporarily suspended U-M's comeback at 4:50 when it scored a rebound goal following a scrum to the right of the cage. The Maize and Blue regained the momentum when Narsai earned her first goal of the game as time was expiring in the third period. Narsai spun off her defender and lobbed a shot into the far side of the goal from the extreme left corner of the pool to make it a 6-4 affair.
Kerney scored with 6:10 left in the fourth quarter to trim the IU lead to 6-5. Indiana then reasserted a two-goal lead at 3:51 while on a power play. Narsai brought U-M to within one goal by scoring on a breakaway tee shot with 2:36 remaining. With under one minute to play, Narsai stole the ball in the U-M defensive end and found a streaking Erin Brown (San Diego, Calif./Bishop's HS). Brown was then fouled from behind with 38 seconds left, giving Michigan a four-meter penalty shot. Narsai was chosen to take the shot and converted to tie the game 7-7 and send it to overtime.
Neither team mustered any quality scoring chances in the first overtime, although U-M picked up a power play late but could not capitalize.
After denying IU's power play bid early in the second overtime, the Wolverines earned their own six-on-five advantage. Nisbet scored the eventual game-winner at 1:26 by putting the ball into the right side of the net from three meters out upon receiving a centering pass by Stephanie Rupp (Hemet, Calif./Hemet HS). The Hoosiers had an opportunity with 30 seconds left, but an offensive foul with the ball at two meters created a turnover in U-M's favor. Narsai capped the scoring with a late goal as time ran out.
In its first game of the day, Michigan dominated Grove City (1-6, 1-2 CWPA) as the Wolverines set a school record with 14 assists in the game and Kristin Hoogenboom (Portland, Ore./Sunset HS) set an individual school record with six goals in the contest. Corrie Kenagy (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro HS) and Heather Karjala (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) also tied a Michigan record with three assists each.
The Wolverines got off to a fast start, scoring twice in the opening minute of play. Michigan ended up scoring the first four goals of the game and held a 4-0 advantage with 2:59 left in the first quarter. Grove City got on the board one minute later to make the score 4-1, but U-M scored two more goals, including Hoogenboom's third marker, to close out the period with a 6-1 lead.
The game slowed down in the second quarter, but Michigan's offense kept scoring. The Wolverines tallied four goals in the final three minutes of the period. Jineane Shibuya (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mid-Pacific Institute) completed the run with a high skip shot as time ran out, and U-M held a 10-1 advantage at the half.
Michigan continued to carry the play in the third quarter, outscoring Grove City 3-1 in the period. In the fourth quarter, the Wolverines opened up with three-goal flurry over a one-minute span. Hoogenboom tied the Michigan single-game record with her fifth goal with 3:20 on the clock and then broke it with 1:24 left in the game.
The Wolverines continue divisional play tomorrow (March 9) at Canham Natatorium. Michigan faces Penn State Behrend at 9:30 a.m. and concludes the tournament vs. Washington & Jefferson at 2:30 p.m.
