IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team was unable to pick up its first conference victory of the season, falling to Iowa 4-3 Sunday afternoon (March 30) at UI's Recreation Building. The Wolverines (5-9, 0-4 Big Ten) gained the momentum early on, winning two of the three doubles matches to earn the first point, but the Hawkeyes (5-7, 1-4 Big Ten) rebounded to win four of six in singles to close out the match.
U-M earned the first point of the day after posting victories at No. 2 and No. 3 in doubles action. Senior Chris Shaya (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Saddlebrook Academy, Fla.) and junior Anthony Jackson (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet HS) teamed up for an 8-4 win over Johan Bergenas and Tres Jones at No. 2. The sophomore pairing of David Anving (Tvaaker, Sweden/Varbergs Gymnasieskola) and Vinny Gossain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) posted a 9-7 win over Pete Rose and Chaitu Malempati at No. 3 to clinch the point for the Wolverines. Iowa prevented the doubles sweep with a win at the top spot.
The Hawkeyes earned their first point of the match when Malempati defeated Gossain (6-4, 6-4) at No. 5. Michigan regained the advantage as sophomore Michael Rubin (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic HS) outlasted Stuart Waters 7-6(3), 6-4 at No. 1 for his 10th dual match singles win of the season. Unfortunately, Iowa battled its way to victory with three-set wins at No. 2 through No. 4 to send the Wolverines to their fifth straight defeat. Sophomore Josef Fischer (Nuremberg, Germany/Bradenton Academy, Fla.) closed singles play with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over David Freijd at No. 6.
The Wolverines will travel to East Lansing, Mich., on Wednesday (April 2) to take on Michigan State. The match is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. at MSU's Indoor Tennis Facility.
