Wolverines Fall Short of Qualifying at Zone Diving Meet

Junior Tealin Kelemen (Riverton, N.J./Moorestown Friends School) posted U-M's top finish in the one- and three-meter springboard events and the platform, while senior Kelly Vander Kuyl (Rockford, Mich./Rockford HS) was the Maize and Blue's next best in each event. Senior/junior Emily Koglin (Heyworth, Ill./Normal University HS) and sophomore Alexis Goolik (Highland, Ind./Highland HS), in her first appearance at the zone diving meet, also competed in all three events for the Wolverines.
Kelemen posted a career-best mark of 487.70 in the one-meter competition and finished 11th overall in the event. Vander Kuyl also had a career day, advancing past the final cut and accumulating a career-high 465.30 points for a 15th-place finish. In 18th after preliminary dives, Vander Kuyl was the last to make the finals and improved three spots with her last dives.
The three-meter competition saw Kelemen place 14th overall as the lone Wolverine to dive in the finals. Kelemen's scored 416.40 points in the competition. Michigan's four divers performed well in the platform competiton, with Kelemen placing seventh (345.45) and Vander Kuyl close behind in eighth (345.05). Goolik and Koglin were 15th and 18th, respectively.
Michigan will send nine swimmers to the 2003 NCAA Championships next Thursday through Saturday, March 20-22, at Auburn University's James E. Martin Aquatics Center in Auburn, Ala. Preliminaries will be held daily at 11 a.m. CST, with finals starting at 7 p.m. CST.
