Michigan Cruises to First-Place Finish at EMU Invitational

YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The No. 17 University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team dominated the field at the Eastern Michigan Invitational, earning a winning total of 1,010 points over the two-day event on Friday and Saturday (Dec. 5-6). U-M won 16 of the 20 events to place first ahead of eight other teams. The host Eagles came in second place with a total of 844 points.
The Wolverines got off to a fast start, claiming victories in four of the first five races. Freshman Kaitlyn Brady (Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleasant HS) took home the 200-yard backstroke title with a time of 2:04.85, and sophomore Abby Seskevics (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS) placed first in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 51.89, followed by senior Amy McCullough (West Bloomfield, Mich./Mercy HS) in second place (52.28). Senior Kelli Stein (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Waterson) kept things going with a win in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:18.43), and senior Anne Weilbacher (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales HS) took first in the 200-yard butterfly race (2:02.77).
Michigan swept the first two relay events, as the team of McCullough, Seskevics, Brady and Weilbacher posted a winning time of 3:28.34 in the 400-yard freestyle race, while the squad of Brady, Kelli Stein,Weilbacher and Seskevics claimed first place in the 200-yard medley event (1:45.90).
Senior Emily-Clare Fenn (Westport, Conn./Staples HS) swam to a first-place time of 4:28.91 in the 400-yard individual medley. Weilbacher posted an NCAA consideration time of 53.83 in her win in the 100-yard butterfly. McCullough took first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.61) and Kelli Stein followed with a win in the 100-yard breastroke (1:04.78). Brady then claimed her second win of the invitational, clocking in at 58.72 to earn first place in the 100-yard backstroke event.
The Maize and Blue finished strong, winning five of the final seven races on the second day. Freshman Elaine Shalla (Fenton, Mich./Fenton HS), senior Maya Mandel (Netanya, Israel/Eldad HS), sophomore Clinique Brundidge (Southfield, Mich./Southfield-Lathrup HS) and freshman Nikki Starr (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon HS) won the 800-yard freestyle relay (7:37.99) before Weilbacher, Brady, junior Tracy Egnatuk (Albion, Mich./Albion Senior HS) and McCullough took first in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:36.13). McCullough earned a victory in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:57.12, and Weilbacher notched her third victory with a win in the 50-yard freestyle (24.16). The relay team of Brady, Kelli Stein, Weilbacher and Seskevics rounded out the U-M winners, taking first place in the 400-yard medley event with a time of 3:52.55.
Michigan is not scheduled to compete again until Jan. 2, 2004, when it races at the Rainbow Invitational in Honolulu, Hawaii, as part of its annual winter training trip.
