Perry Finishes Fourth in 2003 Heisman Trophy Balloting

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Senior tailback Chris Perry (Advance, N.C./Fork Union Military, Va.) of the University of Michigan football team finished fourth in balloting for the 2003 Heisman Memorial Trophy, the Downtown Athletic Club announced tonight (Saturday, Dec. 13) at the Yale Club. Perry received 341 total points and received 27 first-place votes.

Perry completed an outstanding final campaign by winning the Doak Walker Award as the nation's outstanding running back. He earned All-America first team honors from the Walter Camp Football Foundation, American Football Coaches Association, The Sporting News, College Football News, SI.com and Rivals.com. Perry was one of five finalists for the Walter Camp Player of the Year and placed fifth in the balloting for the Associated Press Player of the Year award. He was also the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year by both the conference coaches and media and earned the Chicago Tribune Silver Football as the Big Ten Most Valuable Player.
Perry enters the Rose Bowl game against No. 1 Southern California looking to become the second Wolverine to gain 2,000 combined rushing and receiving yards in a season, joining Anthony Thomas who collecting 2,004 yards during the 2000 season. Perry has 1,955 offensive yards this season, rushing 315 times for 1,589 yards and 17 touchdowns and adding a Michigan running back-record 42 receptions for 366 yards and two touchdowns. He surpassed the 100-yard rushing mark in eight games this season, including the final three contests to end the regular season.
No. 4-ranked Michigan (10-2, 7-1 Big Ten), the outright Big Ten Conference champion, will face No. 1 USC in the 90th Rose Bowl game on Thursday, Jan. 1, in Pasadena, Calif.
