This Week
The University of Michigan women's soccer team (7-6-6, 4-2-4 Big Ten) will travel to Madison, Wis., this week to compete in the 2003 Big Ten Tournament at the McClimon Soccer Complex. Michigan, the No. 4 seed, will take on No. 5 seed Ohio State in the third game of the quarterfinal round on Thursday (Nov. 6) at 4:30 p.m. CST. Should the Wolverines win that game, they would face the winner of the No. 1 Penn State/No. 8 Wisconsin contest in the semifinals on Friday (Nov. 7) at 7:30 p.m. CST. The championship game will be held on Sunday (Nov. 9) at 1 p.m. CST. The winner of the Big Ten Tournament will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Scouting the Opponent
Ohio State -- The No. 20-ranked Buckeyes, who enter the tournament as the No.5 seed, hold an impressive 12-3-3 overall record this season. However, all three of OSU's losses have come in conference play, resulting in a final Big Ten record of 4-3-3. Sophomore Colleen Hoban leads the offense with nine goals and four assists this season, while junior goalkeeper Emily Haynam has allowed just seven goals in 12 games (0.83 GAA). Head coach Lori Walker is in her seventh season at Ohio State and has compiled a career record of 72-59-9. OSU on the Internet: www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com.
Series vs. Ohio State
Ohio State leads the all-time series 8-4-1. Michigan played then No. 12-ranked Ohio State to a 1-1 draw in double overtime back on Oct. 3 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus, Ohio. Senior forward Stephanie Chavez (Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood HS) notched her second goal of the season midway through the first half for U-M's only score, while senior goalkeeper Suzie Grech (Narberth, Pa./The Shipley School) made five saves in net to help preserve the tie.
Michigan at the Big Ten Tournament
The Wolverines hold an all-time record of 12-7 at the Big Ten Tournament, having won title games over Northwestern in 1997 and Penn State in 1999. Last season, fourth-seeded Michigan was upset by No. 5 seed and eventual champion Ohio State on penalty kicks. The two teams battled through two overtimes after a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation, and the Buckeyes squeaked out a victory with a 3-2 advantage in the penalty-kick shootout. U-M is 10-4 in its last six Big Ten Tournaments.
Final Big Ten Standings
Last Week
Freshman goalkeeper Megan Tuura (Tucker, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic HS) made eight saves and three Wolverines tallied goals as the Michigan scored a huge upset Wednesday (Oct. 29), handing then No. 2-ranked Notre Dame its first loss of the season with a 3-2 decision in South Bend, Ind. Sophomores Katie Kramer (Andover, Mass./Andover HS) and Therese Heaton (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South HS) scored first-half goals to put U-M up 2-1 at halftime, and Stephanie Chavez gave the Wolverines a two-goal cushion 3:12 into the second half. Michigan earned its first win in the eight-game series with the Fighting Irish (18-1-1).
Making Her Mark ...
Stephanie Chavez continues to lead the charge for the Wolverines this season, as the senior forward leads the team in points (13), goals (five), shots (34), shots on goal (17) and game-winning goals (three). She ranks eighth all-time on Michigan's career points list (57) and sixth in career goals (22). Her two latest goals have proved to be the biggest for U-M this season. Chavez tallied the game-winner in Michigan's 3-2 upset over Notre Dame (Oct. 29) after notching a goal in overtime to clinch a win over Michigan State a week earlier (Oct. 24). In 79 career games, Chavez has totals of 22 goals and 13 assists for 57 points.
Wearing the 'C'
Senior midfielder Erika Kleinholz (North Ridgeville, Ohio/Elyria Catholic HS) continues to excel as her role as co-captain in 2003. In 18 games this season, Kleinholz has a career-high three goals and is tied for second on the team in points (eight). In 82 career games, Kleinholz has collected six goals and nine helpers for 21 points.
Clutch Katie
Each of Katie Kramer's three goals this season has been a big one for the Wolverines. Kramer scored her first career goal to lead Michigan to a 1-0 home victory over Wisconsin (Sept. 26) before netting the game-winner in a 1-0 win over Central Michigan (Oct. 19). Kramer capped off her solid regular season with U-M's first goal in a 3-2 victory over Notre Dame last week (Oct. 29). Kramer, who is third on the team in scoring this season (seven points), has collected three goals and one assist in 16 career games.
Heaton Up
Therese Heaton's big goal against Notre Dame (Oct. 29) gave her 30 career points at Michigan. Heaton has posted two goals and two assists for six points this season. Last year, Heaton collected 10 goals and four assists en route to being named to the Soccer Buzz Great Lakes All-Freshman team. In 43 career games wearing the Maize and Blue, Heaton has totals of 12 goals and six assists.
Lending a Helping Hand
Junior Robyn Vince (Holt, Mich./Holt HS) leads the Wolverines with five assists this season, perhaps her biggest coming in the win over Notre Dame (Oct. 29). At 31:43 of the first half, Vince took U-M's first corner kick of the game from the left side. The ball sailed toward the front of the cage, where Therese Heaton got a foot on the pass and put it past the Irish goalkeeper to give Michigan the 2-1 edge. Vince, who played two seasons at Tennessee Tech and left as the school's all-time assist leader (26), is sixth on the team in points this season (five).
Who Needs Experience
Megan Tuura has met all expectations in goal this season, as the freshman has allowed just seven goals in more than 1,045 minutes of action this season (0.60 GAA). Tuura, who holds a 4-2-5 record, including two shutouts, capped off a remarkable regular season with a career-high eight saves in the win over Notre Dame (Oct. 29). Tuura, who earned Big Ten co-Defensive Player of the Week honors (Sept. 29), ranks first in GAA for conference games (0.35) and third in Big Ten shutouts (two).
The Leader of the Wolverines
In 10 seasons at the helm of the women's soccer program, Debbie Rademacher has posted a career record of 125-72-19, including a Big Ten mark of 49-29-11. She has led her team to six consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including a trip to the quarterfinal round in 2002. Rademacher reached her 125th career victory with a 3-2 upset over No. 2-ranked Notre Dame on Oct. 29, 2003. In 2001, she reached her fourth major coaching milestone with her 100th win on Nov. 3 against Western Michigan.
Perfect Vision
Although the Wolverines have not been able to generate a lot of offense this season, U-M's defense has more than made up for it. Michigan has scored just 20 goals this year but has only allowed in the same amount. U-M ranks first in goals allowed per conference game, letting in just six goals in 10 games for a 0.60 average. Michigan also ranks second in the Big Ten in conference shutouts (five).
In the Polls
Following its upset victory over then No. 2-ranked Notre Dame (Oct. 29), Michigan received votes in the latest NSCAA/adidas Coaches poll, released Nov. 3. The Fighting Irish dropped one spot to No. 3, while U-M's next opponent, Ohio State, is ranked 20th. The Wolverines also moved up three spots in the NSCAA/adidas Great Lake Regional poll, coming in at No. 4. It marks Michigan's highest regional ranking this season.
