ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's golf coach Andrew Sapp announced today (Thursday, Nov. 20) the signing of Tim Schaetzel (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) and Brian Ottenweller (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central HS) to National Letters of Intent for the 2004-05 academic year.
"We are very pleased to sign both Brian and Tim," said Sapp. "They are both fine golfers, excellent students and multi-sport athletes in high school. Tim brings a lot of national competition under his belt and Brian played in this year's U.S. Junior Amateur Championship to give him some valuable playing experience. Both players have the talent, determination, and work ethic to come in next fall and compete right away for our starting lineup."
Schaetzel, a 2003 American Junior Golf Association Scholastic All-American, has played varsity golf the last four years at Pace Academy in Atlanta, Ga. The two-time team MVP tied for 10th at the 2003 Georgia High School Class AA State Championship after earning medalist honors at the 2003 5AA Regional. He has also played in several junior golf tours, competing with the AJGA, the Future Collegians World Tour, the Southeastern Junior Golf Tour (2002) and the Independent National Golf Tournaments. Schaetzel has been a National Honor Society member the last two years and is a National Merit Scholar Semifinalist.
Ottenweller, a 2003 Michigan Interscholastic Golf Coaches Association Golf Super Team selection, has played varsity golf at Grand Rapids Catholic Central the last four years. The three-time Division II All-State selection was third at the 2003 state finals and tied for seventh at the 2001 and 2002 finals. He was a four-time All-City selection and a three-time All-Area selection. Outside of high school golf, Ottenweller has posted six top-20 finishes in AJGA events the last two years. He also competed at the 2003 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship after winning the qualifier at Grand Haven Golf Club in Grand Haven, Mich.
The Maize and Blue will not play again until 2004 when the Wolverines play in a tri-match with Arizona State and Purdue, Saturday, Feb. 14, at ASU's Karsten Course in Tempe, Ariz.
