ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan wrestling head coach Joe McFarland announced today (Tuesday, Nov. 18) that two student-athletes -- Steve Luke (Massillon, Ohio/Massillon Perry HS) and Tyrel Todd (Bozeman, Mont./Bozeman HS) -- have signed National Letters of Intent during the early signing period to attend and compete in wrestling at the University next fall.
"These are two guys that we pinpointed as wrestlers we would like to have in our program," said McFarland, "so we are very excited to get them both. Not only are they outstanding wrestlers, but they are both outstanding individuals as well. They fit the aggressive style of wrestling that we're looking for at Michigan. They will help us accomplish a lot of our goals, and they will both be exciting to watch in the future."
Luke enters his senior season ranked as the No.1 high school 160-pound wrestler in the nation by Amateur Wrestling News. He is a two-time Ohio state champion and a three-time finalist, placing second at 112 pounds as a freshman in 2001. A three-time wrestling letterwinner, Luke holds a 114-14 career mark. In freestyle competition, he was a 160-pound finalist at the 2003 Junior National Championships and finished eighth at 152 pounds in 2002. Luke is projected to compete at 165 pounds for Michigan.
"I think Steve Luke will be an outstanding wrestler at Michigan," said McFarland. "He has a great work ethic, and he's only going to get better and better. I expect him to fit well into our program."
Heading into his senior season, Todd holds the No. 3 ranking at 189 pounds by Amateur Wrestling News. He posted back-to-back undefeated seasons as a sophomore and junior and owns a 102-3 career record. A two-time Montana state champion, Todd captured the 171-pound title in 2003 and the 160-pound title in 2002. Like Luke, Todd is a three-time finalist, placing second at 145 pounds as a freshman. Competing in the freestyle division, Todd was a 2003 Junior National All-American after placing seventh at 189 pounds. Todd will likely wrestle at 174 or 184 pounds for Michigan.
"Tyrel possesses a lot of the same qualities that I like in Steve," said McFarland. "He has a great work ethic, he's hard-nosed, and he's tough. I really like his style of wrestling."
Michigan opens its 2003-04 dual schedule this weekend, hosting Central Michigan (1 p.m.) and Lehigh (5 p.m.) on Sunday (Nov. 23) at Cliff Keen Arena.
