Rubin Advances to Semifinals in Big Ten Singles Event

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior Michael Rubin (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic HS) of the University of Michigan men's tennis team has reached the semifinals of the 2003 Big Ten Singles Championships after defeating his first four opponents on Saturday and Sunday (Nov. 15-16) at the Varsity Tennis Center. Including Rubin, seven Wolverines competed in the 64-player main draw bracket, while two other U-M players took part in the No. 7-9 draw.

Rubin cruised to straight-set victories over Indiana's John Stone (6-2, 6-2) and Northwestern's Adam Schaechterle (6-0, 6-1) in the first and second rounds on Saturday. Rubin had a bit of a tougher time in third-round action on Sunday, as Ohio State's Joey Atas took the first set of their match 6-3. However, Rubin stormed back to win the final two sets 6-4, 6-0 to advance to the quarterfinal round against Northwestern's Christian Tempke. In that match, Rubin won the first set in a tiebreaker 7-6(5) before winning the second frame 6-4.
Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) nearly met Rubin in the semifinal match, but the freshman went down to Cantey 5-7, 7-6(4), 6-2 in the quarterfinals. Hung had posted wins over Purdue's Paul Rose (6-3, 6-4), Ohio State's Ross Wilson (3-6, 6-3, 6-4) and Michigan State's Chris Mitchell (3-6, 7-5, 6-3) to reach the round of eight.
Senior Anthony Jackson (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet HS) posted straight-set wins over Wisconsin's Scott Green (6-2, 6-4) and Indiana's David Bubenicek (6-4, 6-2) before bowing out to Ohio State's Dennis Mertens (6-3, 6-4) in the round of 16 on Sunday.
Freshman Ryan Heller (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North HS) defeated Iowa's Matis Jasicek 6-2, 6-3 in first-round play on Saturday before handing Wisconsin's Alex Kasarov a 7-6(5), 6-2 loss later in the day. Heller's run was halted by Minnesota's Chris Wettengel, who posted a 6-3, 6-3 victory on Sunday.
Freshman Steve Peretz (Brooklyn, N.Y./The Dwight School) split a pair of matches in the main draw, defeating Minnesota's Brian Lipinski 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 before falling to Northwestern's Tom Hanus 7-6(3), 7-6(3). Peretz was eliminated from the tournament with a loss to Indiana's Ryan Recht in the consolation brakcet (6-1, 6-2).
Junior David Anving (Tvaaker, Sweden/Varbergs Gymnasieskola) and sophomore Carey Rubin (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic HS) both went down in their first-round matches in the main draw. Rubin did pick up one win in the consolation bracket, defeating Wisconsin's Jordan Raemisch (6-0, 6-0).
In the No. 7-9 draw, juniors Vinny Gossain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) and Josef Fischer (Nuernberg, Germany/Bradenton Academy) both drew byes in the first round. Gossain picked up a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 victory over Penn State's Jim Crowell in second-round action before losing 6-2, 6-1 to eventual champion Willy Lock of Northwestern. Meanwhile, Fischer came back to defeat Penn State's Aaron Ellis 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 before a straight-set win over Wisconsin's Peter Amundson (6-1, 7-5). In the championship match of the bracket, Fischer took the first set 6-3 from Lock, before losing the final two frames 2-6, 3-6.
