COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 16 University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team edged out Ohio State 153.5-146.5 Friday night (Nov. 14) at the Mike Peppe Aquatic Center. The Wolverines (5-1) swam to first-place finishes in nine of the 16 events. Freshmen Susan Gilliam (Los Angeles, Calif./Bolles HS) and Lindsey Smith (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) led the way for the Wolverines, each picking up two individual titles and teaming together for one relay title.
U-M jumped out to a fast start, as the quartet of senior Sara Johnson (West Bloomfield, Mich./Lahser HS), senior Kelli Stein (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Waterson HS), senior Anne Weilbacher (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis De Sales HS) and Smith claimed the 400-yard medley relay title with a time of 3:47.48, more than six seconds ahead of second place Ohio State.

After two consecutive victories by the Buckeyes in the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard butterfly, Weilbacher gained back the momentum for Michigan, touching in a 23.79 to win the 50-yard freestyle.
Julie Broms captured the one-meter diving title for OSU in the next event, but Smith countered with a victory in the 100-yard freestyle event (52.18). Seskevics touched the wall less than a second later (52.99).
The Buckeyes once again earned victories in two straight events, the 200-yard backstroke and breaststroke races. Gilliam then won her second event, finishing with a time of 4:55.42 in the 500-yard freestyle. Weilbacher followed with a title in the 100-yard butterfly (55.57), touching nearly three seconds ahead of runner-up OSU.
