Rubin, Heller Advance to Midwest Regional Main Draw

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Sophmore Carey Rubin (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic HS) and freshman Ryan Heller (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North HS) of the University of Michigan men's tennis team have moved on to the main draw at the 2003 ITA Midwest Regional at the MSU Tennis Facility. Both Rubin and Heller defeated their first three opponents on Thursday and Friday (Oct. 23-24) to qualify for the 64-player main draw bracket that begins Saturday (Oct. 25) at 8 a.m.
Rubin, the No. 8 seed in the qualifying round, posted a 7-5, 6-4 win over Toledo's Freddy Gomez before an easy 6-1, 6-4 victory over Louisville's Jeremy Clark. In his final match, Rubin was leading DePaul's Robert Kotrozco 6-4, 0-6, 4-1 before Kotrozco retired due to injury, allowing Rubin to advance to the main draw event.
Heller cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Dayton's Tom Murphy in the first round before a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 defeat of No. 9 seed Matt Christian of Northwestern. Heller then defeated Louisville's Jonathan Howard 6-2, 6-1 to move on to the main draw.
Rubin and Heller will join Anthony Jackson (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet HS), Steve Peretz (Brooklyn, N.Y./The Dwight School), Michael Rubin (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic HS) and David Anving (Tvaaker, Sweden/Varbergs Gymnasieskola) in main draw singles action. Jackson and Michael Rubin will pair up to compete in the doubles bracket, along with the duo of Peretz and Heller. Vinny Gossain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) and Josef Fischer (Nuernberg, Germany/Bradenton Academy) round out the Michigan participants in doubles.
The singles and doubles champions will advance to the ITA National Indoor Championships, which Michigan will host Nov. 6-9 at the Varsity Tennis Center.
