This Week
The University of Michigan women's soccer team (3-5-6, 2-2-4 Big Ten) returns to action this weekend with two matches at the U-M Soccer Field. The Wolverines will host Iowa on Friday (Oct. 17) at 4 p.m. before a non-conference game with Central Michigan on Sunday (Oct. 19) at noon. During half time of the game against the Hawkeyes, Dominoes Pizza will be sponsoring a free pizza night while supplies last. Select fans in attendance will also have their chance at winning free Dominoes products during halftime!
Scouting the Opponents
Iowa -- The Hawkeyes enter the match holding a 3-9-2 overall record in 2003, including an 0-6-2 mark in the Big Ten Conference. Sophomore forward Katelyn Quinn leads the Iowa offense with seven goals this season, while freshmen Lindsey Phillips is second on the team with three goals. Freshmen Danielle Oswald is among the conference leaders in assists with 10. Junior goalkeeper Britta Vogele leads the Big Ten in saves (107) and saves per game (8.23) and has a 2.04 GAA. Head coach Carla Baker is in her second season at Iowa and has a career record of 14-16-3. The Hawkeyes finished last season with an 11-7-1 record and a ninth-place finish in the conference. Iowa returns eight starters and 12 letterwinners from last year's team. Michigan last faced Iowa in its 2002 Big Ten opener in Ann Arbor, where U-M came out on top 2-1 and moved its all-time record against the Hawkeyes to a perfect 7-0.

Central Michigan -- The Chippewas enter the week with a 6-5-2 overall record this season and are tied for fifth-place in the Mid-American Conference standings (4-4-1). Sophomore Stacy Downing has started all 12 games at forward and leads the team with four goals and three assists. Freshman goalkeeper Anne Decker has seen action in 10 games this year and has allowed seven goals for a 0.72 GAA. Mark Salisbury is in his sixth season at the helm of Central Michigan and has compiled a career record of 53-49-18 at the school. The Chippewas return seven starters and 10 letterwinners from last year's squad, which finished 2002 with a 5-9-5 overall record and an eighth place finish in the MAC. The Wolverines played Indiana to a 0-0 tie in double-overtime last Friday (Oct. 10) at home. The Hoosiers (5-6-1, 2-3-1 Big Ten) posted three shots in the two extra periods, including a shot that deflected off the crossbar, but that was the closest chance either team had in the 110 minutes of action. Michigan battled No. 17-ranked Purdue to a 1-1 tie in double- overtime on Sunday (Oct. 12) at the U-M Soccer Field. Junior co-captain Laura Tanchon (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) tallied her first career goal to give U-M the early advantage, but the Boilermakers (9-2-2, 5-1-1 Big Ten) were able to get on the scoreboard with just 22 seconds left in regulation to send the game to extra periods.

Michigan has played in a school-record six double-overtime games in 2003, with every outcome being a draw. Three of the six contests have ended in 0-0 ties, while the other three resulted in 1-1 scores. In the ten-year history of the program, U-M has an all-time record of 11-8-12 in overtime games.
Leaders and Best
Goalkeeper Megan Tuura (Tucker, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic HS) continues her stellar freshman campaign in net for the Wolverines, leading the Big Ten in overall goals-against-average. Tuura has started seven of the ten games she has played in, allowing five goals in 820 minutes of action for a 0.55 GAA. She has collected a team-leading 29 saves and has two shutouts on the year. Tuura, who holds a 2-2-5 record this season, also leads the Big Ten in GAA for conference games (0.43).
Tanchon Tallies First Career Goal
Midfielder Laura Tanchon scored her first career goal in the 1-1 draw to Purdue last Sunday (Oct. 12). The goal came midway through the first half, when Tanchon bended a free kick over the Boilermaker goalkeeper's head for U-M's only goal of the game. In 53 career games, Tanchon has totaled one goal and one assist for three points.
Rademacher Nears 50th Big Ten Win
Head coach Debbie Rademacher needs three conference victories to reach 50 for her career. In 10 seasons at the helm of the women's soccer program, Rademacher has posted a career record of 121-71-19, including a Big Ten mark of 47-29-11. She has led her team to six consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including a trip to the quarterfinal round in 2002. Rademacher needs four wins to reach her 125th career victory at U-M. In 2001, she reached her fourth major coaching milestone with her 100th win on Nov. 3 against Western Michigan.

The Wolverines conclude their 2003 home schedule next weekend, hosting Michigan State and Kansas at the U-M Soccer Field. U-M will take on the Spartans on Friday (Oct. 24) at 4 p.m. and finish out the weekend against the Jayhawks on Sunday (Oct. 26) at 1 p.m.
