MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team continued its defensive dominance on Monday afternoon (Oct. 13), blanking the Central Michigan Chippewas 4-0 in a non-conference affair at CMU's Kelly/Shorts Stadium. Four different Wolverines scored in the win as U-M shut out an opponent for the second straight match and for the fifth time in the last six games.
Michigan took 20 minutes to get on the scoreboard, then exploded for three goals in a span of 5:09 to put the match away. Senior Stephanie Johnson (Houston, Texas/The Kinkaid School) scored the eventual game-winner at 20:05 before junior Adrienne Hortillosa (Chula Vista, Calif./Bonita Vista HS) upped the score to 2-0 at 24:30 with her first career penalty stroke. The Wolverines continued to pour on the offense, scoring again at 25:14 when junior Katy Moyneur (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS) found the back of the cage, converting one of Michigan's 12 first-half shots.
In the second half, the Wolverines' defense limited the Chippewas to just one shot while recording six of their own. U-M finished the scoring at 56:59 when senior April Fronzoni (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West HS) notched her team-high 14th goal of the season, and second in as many games.
The Wolverines outshot Central 18-3, marking the third straight game U-M has limited its opponent to four shots or less. Freshman goalkeeper Beth Riley (Palymra, Pa./Palmyra Area HS) recorded the shutout, making one save, while CMU's Danielle Frank picked up the loss, allowing three goals on nine shots. Frank was chased from the cage in the first half in favor of Laura Plese, who made three saves on four shots down the stretch.
The Wolverines will remain on the road for their next match, traveling to East Lansing, Mich., on Friday (Oct. 17) to face Michigan State in a battle of the only undefeated teams in the Big Ten. Game time is slated for 5 p.m. at the MSU Field Hockey Complex.

The U-M field hockey program received some bad news prior to leaving for Central Michigan. Rachael (Geisthardt) Townsend, a four-year letterwinner and goalkeeper from 1992-95, passed away unexpectedly after completing Sunday's (Oct. 12) Chicago Marathon. Townsend was 29.
Michigan has won 11 of its last 12 games, including a season-high seven straight.
The Wolverines have allowed two goals total in their last six games, winning five by shutout.
U-M has limited its opponents to four shots or less in each of the last three games.
Beth Riley made her eighth start of the season and improved her record to 8-0. Four of those decisions have been shutouts.
April Fronzoni scored three points with a goal and an assist, moving her school-record career point total to 141.
Fronzoni has scored a goal in three of her last four games and now has 62 career markers, two behind Mary Callam's school record of 64, set from 1976-79.
Katy Moyneur's goal was her first of the year.
