ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 11 University of Michigan water polo team kicked off its third varsity season with an 8-3 loss to No. 7 San Jose State but regrouped and downed No. 14 Indiana 12-6 later in the afternoon Saturday (Jan. 25) on the first day of the Michigan Invitational at Canham Natatorium. The Wolverines also played an exhibition contest against Eastern Michigan's club team, winning 12-4.

In the first match of the day, Michigan fell to San Jose State by a score of 8-3. The Wolverines failed to capitalize on two six-on-five opportunities early in the opening quarter, including a two-meter shot by Hausmann that was blocked by Spartan goalkeeper Nichole Lipman. San Jose State responded with the first goal of the game on a two-meter shot that slid past the right post with 2:50 on the clock. The Spartans went on to score three more goals in the period to open a 4-0 lead heading into the second quarter.
Michigan's offense continued to struggle in the second quarter. U-M was awarded three power plays and was able to get off shots from the hole set four times in the period but was unable to score. The lone goal in the second quarter came when Nisbet was whistled for a penalty shot, allowing SJSU to score with 3:47 left in the half. Armstrong was able to get a hand on the penalty shot but could not stop the goal, making the score 5-0 in favor of San Jose State. The teams played even for the remainder of the half, and Michigan went into the locker room facing a five-goal deficit.
Michigan came out in the second half and earned power play opportunities on its first two possessions. The Wolverines were unable to convert each time, but Nisbet broke the ice for the Maize and Blue with her first goal of the game with 3:31 left in the third quarter. Nisbet's goal came on a backhand shot from three meters out immediately following a six-on-five chance for Michigan. San Jose State responded with a backhand goal of their own just before the end of the stanza to make the score 6-1 heading into the final period.
The Spartans scored quickly in the fourth quarter to open up a six-goal lead. U-M responded with goals from Hausmann and Kerney at 5:24 and 4:56, respectively, to make the score 7-3. The Wolverines had a chance to close the gap even more when Stephanie Morse's (Rockford, Mich./Rockford HS) shot slipped past the goalkeeper but did not have enough momentum to cross the the goal line. San Jose State added one more goal in the final minute of play to make the final score 8-3 in favor of the Spartans.
Michigan turned its fortunes around in the second game of the day against Indiana by jumping out to a commanding 5-0 advantage after the first quarter. Erin Brown (San Diego, Calif./Bishop's HS) started the scoring just 16 seconds in when her shot banked off the crossbar and off the back of the IU goalie before floating across the goal line. At 4:41 Nisbet made the score 2-0 on a power play as she tipped in a crossing feed from Jo Antonsen (Agoura Hills, Calif./Agoura Hills HS). The Wolverines then scored on three straight possessions from the 2:13 mark in with back-to-back tallies from Hausmann and goal by Kerney as she was left all alone while cutting to the cage.
Indiana's Melissa Pietras got the Hoosiers on the board at 4:25 of the second quarter, but Delia Sonda (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) responded for Michigan with a six-on-five goal at 3:02 by sneaking a shot under goalie Jessica Gardner's arm from the right side to make the score 6-2 at intermission.
The Michigan defense shut down the Hoosiers in the first half by double and triple-teaming IU's top scorers, Kristin Stanford and Kristi Peterson. Indiana put just one shot on goal in the first quarter and Armstrong was up to the challenge in the second stanza by stopping three quality scoring opportunities.
Indiana scored 20 seconds into the third quarter, however, Michigan received two goals 33 seconds apart courtesy of Sheetal Narsai (Commerce, Calif./Bell Gardens HS) and Emily Pelino (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS). Pelino's goal came in transition as Nisbet found her alone streaking to the goal, allowing her to set up and fire a shot to the far left corner. Indiana scored at 3:09 to cut the deficit to 8-3 but U-M again responded with back-to-back markers. Nisbet scored on a deft backhand shot while set at the left post and Kerney scored as time expired in the third quarter.
Michigan continued to extend its lead by going up 11-3 early in the fourth quarter before IU scored on two consecutive power plays to shorten the advantage to 11-5. The teams then traded goals in the final minutes as U-M emptied its bench and finalized a 12-6 win.
Michigan dominated the exhibition game against Eastern Michigan, jumping out to 5-1 lead after the first period. The Wolverines never looked back, winning 12-4.
Play continues in the Michigan Invitational on Sunday at Canham Natatorium with the Wolverines taking on No. 16 Hartwick at 11:15 a.m. and then facing the Michigan State Spartans in an exhibition contest at 12:15 p.m.
