Five Wolverines Unbeaten in Singles at Michigan Invite

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team kicked off the 2003 portion of its schedule with an impressive showing at the Michigan Invitational held Friday through Sunday (Jan. 10-12) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines won all 10 matches played Sunday to complete competition with a 17-3 singles record and an 8-4 doubles mark in the inaugural tournament.
U-M had five players finish the singles portion undefeated. Junior Chrissie Nolan (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South HS) and sophomores Michelle DaCosta (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne HS) and Leanne Rutherford (Calgary, Alberta/National Sports School) posted victories on all three days to finish 3-0 at the invitational. Junior Kim Plaushines (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) and senior Joanne Musgrove (LaSalle, Ontario/Sandwich HS) won both of their matches, while junior Kavitha Tipirneni (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Darby HS) collected a 2-1 mark. Senior Jen Duprez (Westhampton, N.Y./Westhampton Beach HS) and freshman Debra Streifler (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park HS) split a pair of matches for the Wolverines.
In doubles action, DaCosta and Rutherford paced the team with a 3-0 record. Duprez and Plaushines matched the sophomore duo's win total, posting a 3-1 mark, with the lone blemish coming in a tiebreaker against Kansas' Emily Haylock and Christine Skoda [9-8(3)].
The Wolverines open their dual match schedule with home contests against Illinois-Chicago Friday (Jan. 17, 6 p.m.) and DePaul Saturday (Jan. 18, 1 p.m.) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
