Michigan Blanks Illinois-Chicago in Dual Season Opener

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team began the 2003 dual match season Friday evening (Jan. 17) with an impressive 7-0 victory against Illinois-Chicago at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines (1-0) won their ninth straight season opener and 23rd overall opener in the 29-year history of women's tennis program.

The Wolverines kept the momentum by winning all six singles matches in straight sets and won 73 of a 92 possible points in the 12 sets played against the Flames. Nolan moved into a tie for the team lead in singles victories, posting her 10th win with a 6-1, 6-1 win against Nicole Derouin at No. 2. DaCosta (No. 1), Tipirneni (No. 3), Rutherford (No. 4), Plaushines (No. 5) and Duprez (No. 6) added victories for U-M.
U-M hosts DePaul tomorrow (Saturday, Jan. 18, 1 p.m.) following the men's tennis squad's season-opening match vs. Western Michigan at 10 a.m. The two teams will hold the third annual kickoff event at the matches where fans can win door prizes, receive a free beverage and snack and have the opportunity to meet the players following their competition.
