MADISON, Wis. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team moved up one spot in the Big Ten Conference Outdoor Championships on Saturday (May 18) behind April Phillips' (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS) Big Ten title in the shot put. The Wolverines scored 24 points Saturday -- eight on Phillips' second-place hammer throw finish from Friday that became official Saturday -- to move into a tie for sixth place heading into the final day of the meet.

The record throw came on the junior tri-captain's second toss of the opening round and stood up through two other preliminaries and the finals to earn the first Big Ten Conference title of her career. It marks the second consecutive day in which Phillips set a school mark. Friday (May 17) she threw 193-9 in the hammer to earn second place and give the Wolverines their only points of the day. Through two days of action, Phillips has earned 18 of Michigan's 24 team points.
Other Michigan point winners on the day were Breanne Tenclay (Grandville, Mich./Grandville HS) and Doris Simmons (Cassopolis, Mich./Cassopolis HS), who finished fifth and seventh, respectively, with 4,675 and 4,420 points in the heptathlon. Tenclay led the Maize and Blue heptathletes as she ended the competition with a victory in the 800-meter run at 2:20.79 and a personal-best throw of 107-0 in the javelin.
In other event finals, Candice Wilkey (Elmvale, Ontario/Elmvale HS) recorded a personal-best jump of 18-10 for a 12th-place finish in the long jump. Melissa Bickett (Akron, Ohio/Revere HS) surpassed her week-old personal best of 123-2 (Len Paddock, May 11) by throwing 134-1 with her final javelin throw, earning 11th place in the event.
On the track the Wolverines earned 10 trips to the finals as Katie Jazwinski (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Catholic HS) and the four-member 800-meter team led the way. Jazwinski, running in the second heat of the 1,500-meter run, led most of the way but slowed down along the back stretch and cruised into a second-place finish at 4:34.52. Michigan will send all four of its 800-meter runners to the finals as Rachel Sturtz (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City HS), Tracy Egnatuk (Albion, Mich./Albion HS), Ursula Taylor (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg HS) and Stephanie Hirtle (Salmon Arm, B.C./Salmon Arm Senior HS) ran four of the top six times in the three-heat trials. Sturtz, the defending Big Ten Conference outdoor 800-meter run champion, ran a season-best 2:09.18 to earn the top seed entering Sunday's (May 19) final.
The Wolverines look for the season sweep of conference titles Sunday when Teyonna Simpson (Fremont, Calif./Mission San Jose HS) opens the final day of competition in the triple jump at 11:40 a.m. CDT. With one day left at the Big Ten Championships Purdue leads the 10-team field with 57.5 points.
