Jazwinski, Toman Receive U-M Big Ten Medal of Honor

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan senior student-athletes Katie Jazwinski (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Catholic HS) and Justin Toman (Wallingford, Conn./Lyman Hall HS) have been named Michigan's Big Ten Conference Medal of Honor recipients for 2001-02.
The Big Ten Conference Medal of Honor is presented annually to the graduating male and female student-athlete at each conference institution who has attained the greatest proficiency in scholarship and athletics. Jazwinski and Toman were honored at Tuesday's (April 9) Academic Achievement Awards Reception sponsored by the U-M Athletic Department and Michigan Alumni Association.
Jazwinski, a tri-captain on the 2002 women's track and field team, will graduate from Michigan with a degree in physical education. She has been selected to the Academic All-Big Ten team and earned U-M Athletic Academic Achievement honors three times (1999-2001). During the 2002 track and field season, she student taught at Slauson Middle School in Ann Arbor.
On the track, Jazwinski is a four-time Big Ten champion and was named the Athlete of the Meet at the 2002 Big Ten Indoor Championships after a victory in the mile run and runner-up finishes in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters. Her performance at the meet helped Michigan to its first Big Ten indoor team title in three years. Jazwinski became just the third Michigan student athlete to be named Athlete of the Meet, joining Molly McClimon (1994) and Tania Longe (1998).
An NCAA All-American on the track in 2001, she was the Wolverines lone representative at the 2002 NCAA Indoor Championships, finishing 13th mile run. In addition to her accomplishments on the track, Jazwinski is a two-time All-American (1999-2000) in cross country.
The only four-time team captain in Michigan men's gymnastics history, Toman received the prestigious Nissen-Emery Award given to the top senior male gymnast in the country. He is also a five-time All-American and two-time NCAA parallel bars champion (1999, 2000) and was named the 1999 Michigan Male Athlete of the Year after leading the Wolverines to the NCAA title.
Toman has also been very successful outside of NCAA competition in USA Gymnastics meets, including in ninth-place finish at the 2000 Olympic Trials.
Outside of the gym Toman carries a 3.9 grade point average while completing his master's degree in sports management and communications. He graduated from the U-M with a Bachelor of Science degree in movement science.
