Second Varsity Eight Named Big Ten Boat of the Week

PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- The second varsity eight of the University of Michigan women's rowing team has been named the Big Ten Conference Boat of the Week. The boat received its first weekly honor in the three-year history of Big Ten rowing after finishing in 7:19.90 and defeating Michigan State by nearly 14 seconds last Saturday (April 6) on Lake Ovid in East Lansing, Mich. The win extended its winning streak to 13 races, dating back to the first race of the 2001 season.
The boat was coxed by Corinn Cunningham (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Grosse Pointe HS), stroked by freshman Brett Sickler (Los Gatos, Calif./Los Gatos HS), and featured Julie Brescoll (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North HS), Elizabeth Nelson (Newton, Mass./North HS), Cristin McCarty (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan/Bishop James Mahoney), Jenny Bryant (Wainfleet, Ontario/Lakeshore Catholic), Elizabeth Kreger (Wyandotte, Mich./Theodore Roosevelt HS), Laura Drongowski (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman HS) and Crystal Culp (Fonthill, Ontario/E.L. Crossley) from the seven seat to the bow.
The second varsity eight opened the season with a win over Duke in the Atlantic Coast Conference/Big Ten Double Dual (Saturday, March 30) on Belleville Lake in Belleville, Mich. Its time of 7:07.3 was over 28 seconds faster than the Blue Devils' time of 7:35.4.
U-M's top three boats take a combined 8-1 record to the Buckeye Invitational, hosted by Ohio State University, on Saturday (April 13) at the Griggs Reservoir on the Scioto River in Columbus, Ohio. The No. 8-ranked Wolverines will race against Cincinnati and Clemson in the morning races, which begin at 9 a.m., and against Cincinnati and the third-ranked Buckeyes in the afternoon races, which start at 1 p.m.
