U-M Clinches No. 1 Seed for Division Championships

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The University of Michigan women's water polo team defeated Grove City 14-1 on Sunday (April 7) at the Southern Division Tournament at Indiana University's Counsilman and Billingsley Aquatics Center. With the win, Michigan finishing with a perfect 8-0 record in divisional play and secured the No. 1 seed for the Southern Division Championships. Mandi Hagedorn (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) led U-M's offense with a hat trick, and Julie Nisbet (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara HS) and Megan Hayes (Atherton, Calif./St. Francis HS) each scored twice.
Michigan (17-11, 17-1 CWPA) opened the game strongly and established a commanding 7-0 lead after the first period. Nisbet scored both of her goals in the first period to lead the Maize and Blue attack. Both teams were only able to muster a single goal in the second period and the score was 8-1 at halftime. U-M's defense was strong all day and shut out Grove City in the second half. The offense responded as well and scored three goals in each of the final two quarters.
Michigan has one week off before competing as the No. 1 seed at the Southern Division Championships on April 19-21 in Villanova, Pa. The Wolverines will face the No. 8 seed at 7:10 p.m. on Friday, April 19, and the No. 12 seed at 10:50 a.m. on Saturday, April 20, in round robin play before entering bracket play.

WEEKEND NOTES
With 21 goals against Mercyhurst on Saturday (April 6), Michigan set a school record for most goals in a game. The previous high was 20 goals against Bucknell on Feb. 17, 2002.
By allowing only one goal vs. Grove City en route to a 14-1 victory, the Maize and Blue tied the school record for fewest goals allowed in a game. Two other times this season Michigan has held its opponent to a single tally -- Iona (11-1) on March 2 and Washington & Jefferson (18-1) on March 19.
In defeating Mercyhurst 21-3 on Saturday the Wolverines set the school record for largest margin of victory. Prior to that, the record stood at 17 when Michigan beat Washington & Jefferson 18-1 on March 19, 2002.
For the second straight season, Michigan has finished regular season play 8-0 in the Southern Division. The Wolverines will be the No. 1 seed at the upcoming Southern Division Championships on April 19-21 at Villanova, Pa.
Jen Crisman's (Hudsonville, Mich./Jenison HS) four-goal performance against Gannon on Saturday (April 6) set a personal record for most goals in a contest. Her previous benchmark of three goals was set on March 10, 2002, against Penn State-Behrend. Crisman now has 22 goals on the season.
Casey Kerney (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park HS) set the Michigan record for most goals in a season by scoring a single marker in each of the three games on Saturday (April 6). She tied Julie Nisbet's (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara HS) record of 33 goals, set last season, against Mercyhurst and then set the new mark with a goal against Gannon. Kerney now has 35 scores on the season after scoring yet again against Indiana Saturday night.
