PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- The first varsity eight of the 10th-ranked University of Michigan women's rowing team has been named the Big Ten Conference co-Boat of the Week. The boat received its first weekly honor of the season after upsetting the first varsity eight from No. 3 Ohio State at the Buckeye Invitational on Saturday (April 13) in Columbus, Ohio. They shared the award with Michigan State's first varsity four.
The upset came in the final race when the U-M first varsity eight finished in 6:14.98, almost eight seats ahead of the Buckeyes (6:17.74). The Wolverines also posted a victory over Clemson and Cincinnati in the morning session to give them four victories in five races this season. The crew's only loss this year was to No. 12 Virginia in the season opener, but the boat has won three consecutive contests since that race.
The first varsity eight was coxed by Helen Dalis (Augusta, Ga./Davidson School of Fine Arts), stroked by freshman Leah Ketcheson (Belleville, Ontario/Bayside), and featured Tami McBratney (Brockville, Ontario/Brockville Collegiate), Kate Maxim (St. Helena, S.C./Langley HS), Heather Mandoli (Kelowna, B.C./KLO SS), Erin Kopicki (Dearborn, Mich./Divine Child HS), Sophie Roberge (Mallorytown, Ontario/Thousand Islands), Katie Reynolds (Saint John, New Brunswick/Saint John) and Christina Meyer (Saline, Mich./Saline HS) from the seven seat to the bow.
The first varsity eight's award marks the second straight week a Michigan boat has been recognized. Last week the Wolverines' second varsity eight won Boat of the Week honors following its performance at Michigan State (April 6).
