Jones, Wilkey Lead Blue at Saginaw Valley State Invite

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- Redshirt freshmen Anna Jones (Omaha, Neb./Marian HS) and Candice Wilkey (Elmvale, Ontario/Elmvale District HS) led a small squad of University of Michigan women's track and field competitors at the Saginaw Valley State University Invitational Saturday (April 13) with victories in the 3,000 meters and long jump, respectively.

Claiming her first career victory, Jones ran a strong 3,000 meters, winning the event title with a time of 10:29.41 to finish four seconds ahead of second-place Stacy Courtright of Cornerstone (10:33.42).

Wilkey, seeing her first action of 2002, took the long jump crown when she marked 18-7 1/2. It was the only jump of the meet that cleared the 18-foot barrier as she beat the rest of the field by 16 inches. On the track Wilkey ran to a third-place finish in the 100 meters with a time of 12.91, just two tenths of a second behind Amber Berrien of Siena Heights (12.71) for her second victory of the meet.

Freshman Michelle Nelson (South Orange, N.J./Columbia HS) made her Michigan outdoor track debut with a second-place showing in the 400-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in a time of 1:04.70. Running alongside Nelson was junior/sophomore Christy Tzilos (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS), who finished fifth with a time of 1:07.44. Redshirt freshman Aisha Chappell (Canton, Mich./Salem HS) placed seventh in the event with a run of 1:10.84.

U-M freshman Tracy Egnatuk (Albion, Mich./Albion HS), running unattached, finished first in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:14.67.

The Wolverines head back to the West Coast next weekend to compete in the Mt. SAC Relays Friday through Sunday (April 19-21) with events beginning at 8 a.m. PDT Friday morning.
