WALNUT, Calif. -- For the second consecutive year Katie Jazwinski (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Catholic HS) exited the Mt. SAC Relays with an NCAA automatic qualifying time in the 5,000 meters, as she and April Phillips (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS) led the University of Michigan women's track and field team at the non-scoring Mt. SAC Relays Friday through Sunday (April 19-21) at Hilmer Lodge Stadium.
Jazwinski, who posted a then personal-best time of 16:06.71 in the 5,000 meters at last year's Mt. SAC Relays, set a new personal best this weekend with her first NCAA automatic qualifying mark of the 2002 campaign as she crossed the finish line at 16:02.78. The time ranks seventh in the nation this season according to www.ncaachampionships.com. It marks the second consecutive week in which Jazwinski ran a top-10 national time. Last week at the Miami Invitational (April 13) she posted the sixth-fastest 1,500 meters time in the nation (4:20.22).
Phillips earned a fourth-place finish in the University/Open shot put with a throw of 50-4 3/4 on Sunday, outdistancing fifth-place Andrea Batt of Wyoming by nearly two feet (48-9). Phillips' throw garnered her fourth NCAA provisional mark of the season as she has recorded a provisional mark in her last three meets. It was the lone provisional mark turned in by a Wolverine at the Mt. SAC Relays.
Sophomore hurdler Vera Simms (Mililani, Hawaii/Mililani HS) gave Michigan its second-highest finish at the three-day meet when she placed fifth in the Saturday's University/Open long jump with a leap of 18-8 3/4. The jump was her second farthest of the season, bettered only by a personal-best 19-4 3/4 at the Stanford Invitational (March 29).
Senior Katie Ryan (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) was the Maize and Blue's only competitor on Friday when she ran the 10k for the first time this outdoor season. Ryan ran a strong race, finishing 14th with a time of 35:17.47. Ryan's time missed the NCAA provisional mark of 35:14.7 by only three seconds.
The Wolverines return to action next week at three different events. One U-M squad will head to Philadelphia, Pa., for competition Thursday through Saturday (April 25-27) at the Penn Relays, while the other two squads will compete on Friday and Saturday (April 26-27) in Des Moines, Iowa, and Hillsdale, Mich., at the Drake Relays and Hillsdale Relays, respectively.
