Michigan opened the game with a 2-0 lead and never looked back as four different skaters score to lead U-M to its sixth straight victory at Yost as well as its eighth win in the last nine games.
Freshman forward Charlie Henderson (East Lansing, Mich.) got the Wolverines on the board early in the first, scoring through the five-hole of WMU netminder Jeff Reynaert 3:25 into the game. Freshman defenseman Eric Werner (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) set him up after he captured the puck at the blue line after WMU turned it over in its own zone.
Four minutes into the second period, junior forward Mark Mink (Livonia, Mich.) netted his second goal in as many games on a goal-mouth scramble, scoring on a wrist shot that caromed off Reynaert's back and into the net. Freshman forward Jason Ryznar (Anchorage, Alaska) received the lone assist, feeding the puck to Mink from behind the net.
The Broncos finally got on the board 10:42 into the second period to pull within one when Lucas Drake scored shorthanded. Mike Bishai began the rush up the ice, intercepting a cross-ice pass from sophomore defenseman Mike Komisarek (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) and passing it to Mike Jarmuth, who fed a quick cross-ice pass to Drake for the one-timer that beat senior goaltender Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) before he could recover.
The final stanza featured a more balanced game as the teams were close to even in shots, with Michigan holding a slight 14-11 advantage. U-M was outshooting Western 28-10 entering the third period.
Freshman Michael Woodford (Westford, Mass.) scored at 4:24 to give U-M a two-goal lead for the second time in the game, scoring on a near-impossible angle from the right side of the net after taking a drop pass from freshman forward Dwight Helminen (Brighton, Mich.). Komisarek made it 4-1 on the power play when he blasted a shot from the blueline that beat Reyneart along the ice.
The Broncos closed out the scoring at 17:44 with a power-play goal by Dave Cousineau and played with an extra attacked for the final 1:25 in an attempt to close the gap.
Blackburn made 19 saves in the win while Reynaert halted 38 of U-M's 42 shots. Each team scored once on the power play, with the Wolverines converting one of their seven chances while the Broncos were successful on one of their six opportunities.
The two teams will rematch on Saturday (March 2) in Kalamazoo to close out the regular season, with the CCHA regular-season championship on the line for the Wolverines. Opening faceoff is slated for 7:05 p.m. at Lawson Arena on the campus of Western Michigan University.

N O T E S
Michigan clinched a share of the CCHA regular-season championship with the win tonight, marking the seventh regular-season title the Wolverines have won since joining the CCHA in 1981-82. A win at Western on Saturday (March 2) will guarantee U-M its first outright league title since the 1999-2000 campaign.
U-M is 15-0-1 this season when having a two-goal lead in a game, and is 10-0-1 when scoring the game's first two goals. The Wolverines, who carried a 2-1 lead into the final stanza tonight, are 17-0-3 when leading after two periods of play.
Mike Cammalleri notched an assist in his first game back from mononucleosis, assisting on Mike Komisarek's power-play goal. Cammalleri was on the ice for two of U-M's four goals.
John Shouneyia extended his assist streak to three games with a helper tonight, giving him 0-6-6 in his last three outings. Shouneyia, Michigan's leading scorer with 8-31-39, has a point in eight of his last night games.
Mike Komisarek has a point in six of his last nine games, including a point in each of his last two outings (1-3-4).
Michael Woodford's goal was his first in 17 games.
Dwight Helminen has an assist in each of his last two games (0-2-2) and a point in four of his last six skates, recording 1-3-4.
Jason Ryznar's assist was his first point in seven games.
Mark Mink has netted a goal in each of his last two games, recording 1-2-3, his first goal-goal scoring streak since Feb. 11-12, 2000, when her scored a goal in each game against Western Michigan.
Eric Werner extended his assist streak to three games (0-3-3), equaling a season high. He has a point in eight of his last 11 games, recording 2-8-10, including a helper in four of his last five outings.
Charlie Henderson has three goals in his last four games, scoring in three contests.
Q U O T E S
Head Coach Red Berenson
On the game ... "Good efforts by different players. Charlie Henderson continues to play well and has a good nose for the net. He scored a big goal for us. You knew this would be a close game, and Mark Mink scores a goal. I think if we got the chances, and it could have made the game a little less close, but it was a close game right unto the middle of the third period."
On Michael Woodford scoring tonight ... "The minute (Dwight) Helminen blocked that shot, you block a shot like that you deserve to score a goal. Although Helminen didn't score that goal, he set it up. It was good for Woodford to get one that went in for him. We need those guys to chip in. It's not always going to be (John) Shouneyia, (Jed) Ortmeyer, (Eric) Nystrom or (Mike) Cammalleri. It's important that other players contribute."
On Mike Cammalleri's return ... "It's good to have Mike back. Of course he added a dimension to our team that's special. It's good that he got through the game and feels good. He's going to need a couple of games to get back in sync totally with things and conditioning but that was a good start for him."
Junior Forward Mike Cammalleri
On Michigan State's loss and clinching a share of first place ... "It's an opportunity for us, but it doesn't mean anything if we don't win tomorrow night. We have to be focused tomorrow night."
Freshman Forward Charlie Henderson
On his goal ... "It's always a good thing to get the first goal, no matter who you're playing against, especially in a game like this where you have such a big opportunity to do so much."
