The Wolverines took a 1-0 lead for the second straight night when senior forward Craig Murray (Penticton, B.C.) netted his third power-play goal in six games, scoring on U-M's first opportunity with the man advantage. Freshman forward David Moss (Dearborn, Mich.) found Murray in the slot for a shot that beat WMU netminder Jeff Reynaert over his right shoulder.
The Broncos responded 25 seconds later, scoring the first of two straight goals to take a 2-1 lead after the first 20 minutes. Lucas Drake tied the game up at 9:58, one-timing a pass from Trevor Cook at the left side of the goal mouth, before Dana Lattery gave Western its first lead of the weekend, scoring at 18:29 on a backhanded shot into an open net after senior goaltender Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) had committed to his shot fake.
Freshman forward Eric Nystrom (Syosset, N.Y.) tied the game at 2-2 just over four minutes into the second period, scoring his 15th goal of the season to tie the team's goal-scoring lead. With the Wolverines operating in the Broncos zone, senior defenseman Jay Vancik (Medina, Ohio) fired a shot from the left point that went off Reynaert and to Nystrom, who was parked at the right side of the net to bang it home.
The Wolverines answered with four goals in the third period to secure the victory.
Junior forward John Shouneyia (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) gave U-M the lead for the second time in the game at 4:42 into the third period, carrying the puck around the net and wristing it past Reyneart's glove side. With the goal, Shouneyia ended a 13-game goal-scoring drought and tied a career high with his ninth goal of the season.
Junior forward Mike Cammalleri (Richmond Hill, Ontario) put the Wolverines up by two at 7:48, scoring with a two-man advantage for his first goal since returning from his 10-game absence due to illness. Cammalleri took a pass from Shouneyia in the right faceoff circle and slapped the puck past Reyneart, who was covering Shouneyia on the left side of the net.
Vancik added his fifth goal of the year at 18:18, scoring in an empty net, while freshman forward Charlie Henderson (East Lansing, Mich.) tapped in the puck at 18:40 to make the score 6-2.
Blackburn stopped 13 shots in net while Reyneart made 23 saves for Western as the Wolverines outshot the Broncos 28-15. U-M converted on two of its seven power-play chances while WMU was 0-for-5.
The Wolverines will return home next weekend to open play in the CCHA Tournament, hosting Lake Superior State in a first-round, best-of-three series Friday through Sunday, March 8-10. Opening faceoff is slated for 7:35 p.m. each night at Yost Ice Arena.
