Michigan Loses Twice in Day Two, Finishes 12th at UCSB

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- The University of Michigan women's water polo team fell in two tight matches against No. 11 Cal-Davis and No. 9 Cal-San Diego at the UCSB Invitational on Sunday (Feb. 24). In U-M's morning game against UC Davis, the Wolverines were unable to preserve a halftime lead, dropping the game 7-6. Michigan then played UCSD in the 11th-place game at the Rec Center Pool, and the Maize and Blue was outscored 2-0 in the third period and that proved to be the difference in a 6-4 loss to the Tritons.
Michigan was led in the pool by Erin Brown (San Diego, Calif./Bishop's HS) and Julie Nisbet (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara HS). Brown tallied three goals against the Aggies from UC-Davis and added another against UCSD. Nisbet, playing in front of a hometown crowd, scored a single goal in each contest.
The Wolverines hung with UC-Davis early and took a one-goal lead (3-2) after the first half. The Aggies battled back in the third quarter to tie the game up at four goals apiece heading into the final stanza. Michigan managed to find the back of the UC-Davis net twice in the final seven minutes, however, the Aggies edged U-M with three scores in the final period to take the contest, 7-6.
In the afternoon game, Michigan stayed with Cal-San Diego for the opening 14 minutes, as the teams were tied 3-3. For the second time on the day, Michigan was outscored in the third quarter, this time 2-0. That deficit proved to be too much for the Maize and Blue to overcome. U-M scored once more in the final period of play but another goal from the Tritons capped off the scoring for the game. Michigan was defeated 6-4 to finish 12th in the 16-team tournament.
The Wolverines next travel south along the coast to Long Beach, Calif., to take on the No. 7 (tie) Long Beach State 49ers on Tuesday (Feb. 26). The match is set to start at 4 p.m. PST at the Belmont Plaza Pool.
