LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan women's water polo team opened its California trip with a 10-3 loss to No. 6 Loyola Marymount on Thursday (Feb. 21) at Burns Aquatic Center. The Wolverines' loss to the defending Western Water Polo Association champions snapped a four-game U-M winning streak.
The Wolverines found themselves down early as Loyola Marymount scored a flurry of three goals in a 1:18 span early in the first quarter. Casey Kerney (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park HS) opened the scoring for the Maize and Blue with a six-on-five goal with 2:10 left in the first period. The Lions answered with four more scores before Julie Nisbet (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara HS) was able to find the back of the net. The Lions scored once more before the half to lead 8-2 at the break.
The Michigan defense responded well in the second half by holding LMU to only two goals. However, LMU goalie Devon Courtney stymied the Wolverines as she made seven of her 12 saves in the second half. Michigan's only second-half score came from freshman Erin Brown (San Diego, Calif./Bishop's HS) in the final minute of play.
Michigan will continue its West Coast swing as it heads north on US-101 to Santa Barbara. The Maize and Blue will play a single match against the UCSB Gauchos on Friday (Feb. 22) at 5 p.m. PST and then remain in Santa Barbara to participate in the UCSB Invitational over the weekend (Feb. 23-24).
