Wolverines Fall to Spartans in Non-Conference Affair

Michigan State (21-6-5) opened the scoring early in the first period as a pass from John-Michael Liles bounced into the slot and found its way to Goodenow, who broke in, faked senior goaltender Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) to his glove side and then placed the puck between Blackburn's blocker and leg just 1:26 into the game.
The Wolverines quickly answered, however. At 3:50 of the first, freshman forward Dwight Helminen (Brighton, Mich.) cleanly won a faceoff to the right of Spartan goaltender Ryan Miller and fed the puck back to freshman forward Charlie Henderson (East Lansing, Mich.), who was positioned at the top of the face-off circle. Henderson blasted a one-timer that bounced off Miller's left shoulder, landed behind him and trickled in to tie the game at 1-1.
Just as quickly as U-M tied the game though, Michigan State was able to jump back into the lead again on another bouncing-puck goal. Goodenow's second goal of the game came on what appeared to be a back-handed dump-in attempt from the Michigan blue line. The puck bounced in front of Blackburn, off his glove and then into the net to give the Spartans the 2-1 lead at 4:49 of the first. Michigan won the shots-on-goal battle in the first period, 9-8.
A scoreless second period saw each team get a quality scoring chance with under five minutes left in the frame. The Spartans almost took a two-goal lead when Lee Falardeau dragged down freshman defenseman Brandon Rogers (Rochester, N.H.) along the near-side boards, corralled the puck, and broke in on Blackburn's left side. Blackburn made the initial save but gave up a rebound in the slot that was buried home by MSU forward Steve Jackson. The goal was disallowed, however, when referee Steve Piotrowski called Farlardeau with a holding penalty.
The Wolverines failed to score on the ensuing power play but were able to get their own scoring chance late in the period. With just under a minute left, junior forward John Shouneyia (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) collected a bouncing puck right in front of the Michigan State goal and ripped a back-hander toward the near post. Miller, who was covering the bottom of the net and failed to make a save attempt, watched the puck sail wide and the teams entered the locker room with the same 2-1 Spartan lead. Michigan led the period in shots on goal with an 11-3 margin.
In the third period Michigan State added an insurance goal from Mike Lalonde at 10:19. Lalonde raced down the left wing, pushed the puck around junior defenseman Mike Roemensky (White Lake, Mich.) while avoiding Roemensky's check, corralled the puck and beat Blackburn underneath his glove for the final tally of the game.
Michigan outshot Michigan State 28-21 in the game, with Miller making 27 saves. Blackburn made 18 saves in the losing effort. Both teams failed to light the lamp with the man advantage, the Wolverines going 0-2 while the Spartans went 0-3.
The Wolverines return to CCHA play next weekend, hosting the Ohio State Buckeyes on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 22-23) in a two-game series at Yost Ice Arena. Opening faceoff is slated for 7:35 p.m. on both nights.

Q U O T E S
Head Coach Red Berenson
On tonight's game ... "I thought we were the better team for maybe half the game. We couldn't score when we needed to score, so I think our team learned a lot about themselves and about the competition. We obviously have to make our chances count and we can't put ourselves put ourselves behind the eight ball like that."
On what the players learned ... "Those two things obviously. You've got to put your chances in, you look at the tape the next day and you say 'Geez, we had about eight good chances,' you've got to put a couple of those in. On the other hand, we can't give up weak goals like we gave up, whether its our defensemen or our goalie, they are too important in a game like this."
On there being any consolation for tonight's game being non-conference ... "This game was not a show, this was a game. No matter what the implications, we didn't come out on top. That's the bottom line. Whether it's CCHA points or NCAA, we cannot feel good about this game."
Freshman Forward Charlie Henderson
On the first five minutes and U-M's slow start ... "We should be ready to come here and play as soon as we get to the rink. That is the one thing I guess we weren't ready for tonight, in the first five minutes. That killed us."
On team morale ... "I think we played pretty well. After the first five minutes, they got a couple of good breaks and we didn't capitalize on our chances. Our chances were there. The puck just doesn't bounce right sometimes. Obviously the next four games are huge for our team, even more so than this game. We just need to be ready to play next week. This is a big week of practice. It is a possibility that we will see them again in the CCHA tournament."
