Less than two minutes later, freshman David Moss (Dearborn, Mich.) tallied the second Michigan goal when freshman Eric Werner (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) intercepted a pass in the Ohio State zone and sent a pass that deflected off a Buckeye defenseman to Moss, who sent the puck past Betz.
Michigan extended its lead to 3-0 at the 9:03 mark of the first period when freshman Eric Nystrom (Syosset, N.Y.) received a pass in the slot from Ortmeyer and beat Betz through his five-hole.
After a scoreless second period that saw the Buckeyes outshoot the Wolverines 14-5, freshman Charlie Henderson (East Lansing, Mich.) added a shorthanded tally for the game's final score. Skating on a two-on-one break with Shouneyia, Henderson received a pass on the right side of the Ohio State net and sent a shot past Betz's glove side.
Betz saved 20 of the Wolverines' 24 shots in net for Ohio State as the Buckeyes outshot U-M 28-24, including 22-11 over the final 40 minutes. Each team failed to convert on the power play, with U-M posting four shots on net in its three chances while stopping all six of OSU's opportunities.
The Wolverines and Buckeyes will close out the series on Saturday night (Feb. 23), with opening faceoff slated for 7:35 p.m. The game has been designated as Senior Night, with Michigan's four seniors -- Blackburn, forward Craig Murray (Penticton, B.C.), goaltender Kevin O'Malley (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) and defenseman Jay Vancik (Medina, Ohio) -- being honored in a postgame ceremony.

Michigan extended its winning streak at Yost Ice Arena to a sesaon-high four games and improved its home record to 8-5-2.
U-M has won each of its last six CCHA games.
The Wolverines killed all six of Ohio State's power plays, extending their penalty-killing streak to 64 straight. Michigan, which has not allowed a power-play goal in 14 games, has scored seven shorthanded goals during the string.
John Shouneyia tallied a career-high three assists, establishing career highs for points and assists in a campaign. Shouneyia leads the team with 8-2836, eclipsing the 9-25-34 he recorded last season.
Josh Blackburn posted his 14th career shutout, moving to within one of Marty Turco's (1994-98) school record. Blackburn also tied a career high with his fifth blanking of the season.
Jed Ortmeyer set a career high for goals in a campaign with his 1-12 totals tonight, scoring his 11th of the season. The mark betters his 10 markers from 27 games last year, while his 11-16-27 improves his career-high point total from a year ago (10-1525).
Charlie Henderson netted his second shorthanded goal of the season -- one of three Wolverines to accomplish that feat -- and has a goal in his last two games.
David Moss netted his first goal in nine games and was a +1 on the evening, moving to the even mark in plus-minus rating on the season. Moss, who has been as low as C9 this season, is +9 over his last 16 games and is a positive or even rating for the first time since Oct. 13, a span of 30 games.

Head Coach Red Berenson
On tonight's game ... "I thought our team really did what it needed to do in the first 10 minutes of the game and that may have been the difference in the game. In the second period, I thought they outplayed us and (Josh) Blackburn kept the score the way it was. In the third period it was pretty even. It was a game at 3-0, and they are a team to respect. They've got some good forwards. (R.J.) Umberger is a great player, and I thought we did a pretty good job denying him, but he'll be back tomorrow night so the weekend is not over. We can feel good about the game but we have another game tomorrow night."
On the penalty-killing unit ... "Our penalty killing needs to help us and it did. We took some penalties and scored a big shorthanded goal and it kind of took the game out of reach."
On the pressure of the weekend series ... "We took the pressure off us and put some on them. They're in a little different situation. We've got these two games this weekend and they literally have three games this weekend, Friday, Saturday and Monday, so they're looking at something different, whether it's fatigue or how you use your players, but that has to come into their mentality. We have nothing to save it for."
Junior Forward John Shouneyia
On the game's first 10 minutes ... "The first 10 minutes we came out there and pretty much controlled the tempo of the game. We cleared the puck out and got it in and we worked it down low and we pretty much put it in their zone the whole first period."
Senior Goaltender Josh Blackburn
On his performance ... "I just felt really sharp and I was seeing the puck really well. I felt like I was out a good distance outside the crease, plus I was tracking the puck really well."
