Wolverines Beat Clemson to Remain Undefeated

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team remained unbeaten with a 5-2 victory against Clemson Saturday afternoon (Feb. 17) on a neutral site at the University of Alabama's Hank Crisp Indoor Tennis Facility. The Wolverines (6-0) won the doubles point and secured the victory with wins at the first four singles slots.
U-M clinched a closely contested doubles point as senior Henry Beam (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix HS) and freshman Matt Lockin (Lilburn, Ga./N.D. Independent Study) won a 9-8 match against Sanders Koning and Micah Thompson at No. 2, winning the tie-breaker by a 7-4 score. The Wolverines gained an 8-5 victory at No. 1 as juniors Chris Shaya (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Saddlebrook Academy, Fla.) and Chris Rolf (Midland, Mich./Midland HS) beat Marko Gojanovic and Nathan Thompson. Clemson forced the deciding match at No. 2 as Damiisa Robinson and Goran Sterijowski won 8-6 over senior Greg Novak (Stoney Creek, Ontario/Cardinal Newman HS) and sophomore Anthony Jackson (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet HS) at No. 3.
In singles competition, the Wolverines put the match away with straight-set victories from Beam at No. 1, senior Ben Cox (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake HS) at No. 2 and Lockin at No. 4. Jackson added a come-from-behind, three-set win (5-7, 6-2, 6-3) at No. 3 over Micah Thompson to complete a sweep of the top four spots. The Tigers gained their only team points as Nathan Thompson and Sanders Koning won three-set matches at Nos. 5 and 6.
The Wolverines complete the weekend road trip tomorrow (Sunday, Feb. 17) against Alabama. The match will be played at the Hank Crisp Indoor Tennis Facility beginning at 11 a.m. CST.
