This Week
The No. 24 University of Michigan women's soccer team (13-5-1, 7-2-1 Big Ten) enters the Big Ten Conference Tournament as the No. 2 seed. The Wolverines will face No. 7 seed Ohio State in the first game of the quarterfinals Thursday morning (Nov. 7) at 10 a.m. on Michigan State's Old College Field in East Lansing, Mich. The semifinal match on Friday (Nov. 8) will pit the Michigan/Ohio State winner against the No. 3 Purdue/No. 6 Indiana winner at 3:30 p.m., with the final held Sunday (Nov. 10) at 1 p.m. The championship team receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. All games will be played on Old College Field.
Scouting the Field (Quarterfinals/Semifinals)
Ohio State C The Buckeyes are the No. 7 seed in the Big Ten Tournament, finishing the regular season with a 7-10-1 record and a 4-5-1 mark against conference opponents. The Maize and Blue earned a 1-0 win at the U-M Soccer Field (Oct. 6) in this year's previous meeting between schools, as Andrea Kayal (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills HS) scored the game-winning goal and Suzie Grech (Narberth, Pa./The Shipley School) made six saves in the win. Ohio State is led on offense by sophomore Lisa Grubb, senior Jen Miller and freshman Colleen Hoban. Redshirt sophomore Emily Haynam has emerged as the Buckeyes' No. 1 goalkeeper. Ohio State on the Internet: ohiostatebuckeyes.com.
Purdue C One possible semifinal scenario has Michigan advancing to meet No. 17 Purdue, the tournament's No. 3 seed, in a rematch of one of the Wolverines' two Big Ten losses. The Boilermakers, who earned a 1-0 win over Michigan, Oct. 11, in West Lafayette, Ind., finished the regular season 12-3-2 and were 6-3-1 in Big Ten play. Juniors Jennie Moppert and Annette Kent, combined with sophomore Lauren Sesselmen, lead the Gold and Black on offense, while senior Jocelyn Cavalier has started every game in goal this season for Purdue. Purdue on the Internet: www.purduesports.com.
Indiana C The Hoosiers, at 4-4-2 in conference play (10-6-2 overall), dropped to the No. 6 seed after losing a tiebreaker with Wisconsin. Michigan defeated IU 2-0 earlier this season (Oct. 13) in Bloomington, Ind., with goals by Stephanie Chavez (Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood HS) and Therese Heaton (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South HS). Indiana has received strong performances this season from junior Shelley Gruzska, senior Jenny Mann and freshman Kristen Zmijewski. Junior Shaunna Daugherty has been solid in the net for the Hoosiers. Indiana on the Internet: www.iuhoosiers.com.
Scouting the Rest of the Field
Penn State C The No. 1 seed and repeat Big Ten regular-season champion, No. 11 Penn State (15-2-1, 9-1-0) suffered its only conference loss at the hands of the Wolverines (Oct. 4). Michigan earned the decisive 4-0 decision over the Nittany Lions with all four of its tallies in the second half. Andrea Kayal struck the game-winner and three other U-M players scored to help Michigan to the victory, while Suzie Grech made five stops in goal. Penn State on the Internet: www.gopsusports.com.
Michigan State C The Spartans (12-5-2) enter the conference tournament as the fourth-seeded team following a 5-3-2 Big Ten season. Michigan tied MSU 1-1 (Oct. 25) with a Therese Heaton tally in the final minutes. The Spartans took a one-goal lead with 15 minutes to go, in a game that featured 29 combined shots. The tournament host, Michigan State will play its first game against Wisconsin. Michigan State on the Internet: www.msuspartans.com.
Wisconsin C Winning a tiebreaker against Indiana following identical 4-4-2 conference records, the Badgers (10-7-3) are the No. 5 seed. Senior forward Abby Crumpton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) netted the second hat trick of her career in the Wolverines' 3-2 win against the Badgers earlier this season (Sept. 27) in Madison, Wis. Wisconsin lines up opposite Michigan State in the quarterfinals. Wisconsin on the Internet: www.uwbadgers.com.
Illinois C The Fighting Illini (7-10-1, 4-6-0) earned their No. 8 seed in dramatic fashion, needing a win in their final game of the season against Purdue (Nov. 3) to clinch a Big Ten Tournament berth. The Illini succeeded, scoring the winning tally with just 30 seconds left in regulation to gain the 3-2 win and final seed in the eight-team tournament. Michigan earned a 4-1 win over Illinois (Sept. 22). Illinois on the Internet: www.fightingillini.com.
Michigan at the Big Ten Tournament
U-M is 12-6 all-time at the Big Ten Tournament, having won the title game in 1997 over Northwestern (1-0 OT) and again in 1999 over Penn State (4-2). Last season in West Lafayette, Ind., Michigan defeated Michigan State in the quarterfinals (2-0, Nov. 8, 2001) before conceding a 1-0 double-overtime loss to Illinois in the semifinal game. The Wolverines are 10-3 in the last four tournaments.

Last Week
The Wolverines lost a 1-0 non-conference contest at Kentucky last Friday night (Nov. 1). Wildcat junior Danielle Slupski scored the first goal of her career in the 33rd minute to give Kentucky the victory. Suzie Grech supplied the Wolverines with seven saves, including two in a 30-second stretch to begin the second half, and Abby Crumpton hit the crossbar with one of her four shots, but the Maize and Blue could not salvage a tie against the tough UK attack.
Yep, That's Five
Senior defender Andrea Kayal has been devastating on corner kicks and set pieces this season. Kayal has scored five goals, equaling her career total prior to this season, all off of free kicks. Kayal scored two goals, the first multi-goal game of her career, against Oakland (Oct. 27) following Amy Sullivant (Utica, Mich./Eisenhower HS) free kicks.
Awesome Andrea
With the first goal against Oakland (Oct. 27), Andrea Kayal moved into a tie for fifth place among Michigan's career leaders in game-winning goals with seven. Prior to adding her second goal of the game, Kayal's last seven goals had been game-winners, dating back to Oct. 1, 2000. Four of her five goals this season have been game-winners.
Winner's Circle
With a Big Ten-leading seven shutouts, Suzie Grech has surpassed Carissa Stewart's (1997-2000) 1999 total for the second most by a Michigan goaltender in a single season. Grech, who holds the single-season record with 11 shutouts (2001), is also Michigan's career shutout leader with 21. Additionally, Grech's 13 wins are the second best single-season total in school history.
Assisting Amy
Senior defender Amy Sullivant recorded her second career multi-assist game with two helpers against Oakland (Oct. 27), tying her for third on Michigan's career list. Sullivant has set a career best with nine assists this season. She had a season-high three assists against Illinois (Sept. 22), tying the school record for most in a single game.
Sully Starts Again
Only two players in Michigan history have started in more games than Amy Sullivant. Earning her 84th start against Kentucky, Sullivant trails only Shannon Poole (89, 1996-99) and Kacy Beitel (88, 1997-2000). Sullivant has started in 17 games this season, missing two contests with an ankle injury, and has played in 86 career games.
The Season So Far...
Through 19 games, Abby Crumpton has tallied a team-leading 30 points (10 goals, 10 assists). Crumpton currently occupies a tie for the seventh-best season point output in Michigan history, equaling her 2001 mark. Crumpton also is tied for fifth place as her 1999 point total of 32 occupies the slot with Ruth Poulin's (1996-99) 1997 mark.
She's One of the Young Americans
Abby Crumpton made news in the offseason when she was called up to play with the United States Under-20 women's national team. Crumpton returned to campus in the Fall, only to make waves in the Michigan record book. Crumpton is currently second in both career goals (42) and assists (27). With 111 career points, the senior is within striking distance of becoming Michigan's most prolific scorer and topping Kacy Beitel's (1997-2000) record of 114 points. Amber Berendowsky (1996-99) sits between Beitel and Crumpton in second place with 113 points.
U-M Career Point Leaders
1. | Kacy Beitel (1997-2000) | 114 |
2. | Amber Berendowsky (1996-99) | 113 |
3. | Abby Crumpton (1999-present) | 111 |
One of the Best
Abby Crumpton sits atop most of the Big Ten's offensive categories. Crumpton is tied for the conference lead in points with 30. Crumpton is part of a two-way tie for fourth with 10 goals and a two-way tie for second in assists with 10.
Kentucky On My Mind
Michigan fell to 2-3-1 all-time against the Wildcats with last Friday's loss. The Maize and Blue have been unlucky against UK of late, going 0-3 since its last win on Nov. 1, 1998.
Wolverine Drought
The Wolverines have been shut out in all five of their losses this season. With the exception of its 4-0 loss at Minnesota (Sept. 29), the Maize and Blue has four 1-0 losses, two at the hands of ranked opponents.
Conversely...
The Wolverines are unbeaten when scoring at least one goal, at 13-0-1 this season. Michigan scored a season-high five goals against Eastern Michigan (Sept. 8) at the U-M Soccer Field. The Maize and Blue has allowed more than one goal in only two games, yielding two at Wisconsin (Sept. 27) and four at Minnesota (Sept. 29).
Home Girls
Michigan tied a school record with nine home victories this season. The Wolverines also won nine home contests in the 2001 season. Michigan is 18-2 at home over the past two seasons, during which time the Maize and Blue built a 17-game unbeaten streak at the U-M Soccer Field, the longest in school history. After losing their first home game of 2001 against Kentucky (Sept. 7), the Wolverines rebounded with a 1-0 win over Dayton (Sept. 9) and went on to earn nine more home wins. Before their first home loss this season on Oct. 17, Michigan had gone 8-0 at home in 2002. Michigan's previous longest home unbeaten streak was 14 games from Oct. 27, 1996, through Oct. 4, 1998, during which Michigan went 12-0-2.
