| Hortillosa has scored a goal in each of the last two contests. |
Michigan responded at the 18:04 mark with sophomore forward/midfielder Adrienne Hortillosa's (Chula Vista, Calif./Bonita Vista HS) third goal of the season. Hortillosa tipped a shot from junior defender Stephanie Johnson (Houston, Texas/The Kinkaid School) from just outside the circle past a diving Christy Morgan to tie the contest at 1-1.
Less than four minutes later, junior forward April Fronzoni (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West HS) tallied her team-high 17th goal on a breakaway to give the Wolverines a 2-1 advantage. Michigan maintained the lead into the half while outshooting the Blue Devils 6-3.
The Wolverines extended the lead to 3-1 just 36 seconds into the second half when a scramble in front of the Duke goal resulted in a penalty shot. Johnson beat the Duke goalie on the right side for her 12th goal of the season.
With five minutes remaining, Duke mounted an offensive charge that resulted in several scoring opportunities. After coming up empty on a penalty corner, the Blue Devils received a penalty stroke for an infraction by Maloney. Johanna Bischof proceeded to trim the margin to 3-2 with a quick slap shot into the bottom right corner of the cage.
Duke managed to get the ball back into scoring position, but the strong Wolverine defense kept the Blue Devils from getting any shots on goal in the final minutes of the contest. Michigan outshot Duke 13-8 while earning eight penalty corners.
The Wolverines will open postseason play next weekend, traveling to Columbus, Ohio, for the 2002 Big Ten Conference Tournament, hosted by Ohio State. The Wolverines, the top seed in the seven-team field, will receive a bye into the semifinal round, where they will meet the winner of the Ohio State-Iowa match at noon on Saturday, Nov. 9. The winners of the Michigan State-Indiana and Penn State-Northwestern matches will square off in the other semifinal at 2 p.m., with the championship game slated for noon on Sunday, Nov. 10. All matches will take place at the North Turf Field.

Michigan's 17 wins mark the fourth-highest win total in school history. The school record for wins is 20, a mark that is attainable this with at least two matches remaining on the schedule in addition to at least one NCAA Tournament contest. Also important to note is U-M's number of losses (two), which is two fewer than the school record of four, set in 2000.
The Wolverines finished the regular season with an 11-2 mark in non-conference play.
The Big Ten will announced its field hockey awards on Thursday (Nov. 7) at its annual pre-championship banquet. The Wolverines will be presented with their Big Ten regular-season trophy at that event.
Stephanie Johnson netted her 12th goal of the season, establishing a career high for goals in a campaign. Her previous mark was 11, set last year. Johnson also scored her second penalty-stroke marker of the year and is 2-for-2 this season in that category. Johnson has taken all of U-M's penalty strokes over the last two years, going 7-for-9.
Adrienne Hortillosa has two markers in her last two games after scoring just once in her first 17 appearances.
April Fronzoni tied a career high with her 17th goal of the year, equaling her feat from her freshman campaign in 2000. Fronzoni has goals in three of her last four outings.
