Wolverines Finish in Third Place at Three-Day Nike Cup

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team had a strong day in the pool Saturday (Nov. 23) and finished the final day of the Nike Cup in third place with 534 points. The Wolverines, who were second after the first day of competition, could not surmount Virginia Tech's second-place total of 573.5 points or catch runaway winner North Carolina (959).

Abbey swam a season-best time of 1:58.83 in the 200-yard backstroke. Her time was less than half a second behind the race leader and represented over a five-second improvement on her previous fastest mark this season (2:04.02).
Kelemen continued her success in the diving well with a strong showing the one-meter springboard competition. After leading all participants in the morning's preliminary dives, Kelemen posted a score of 270.10 to take her fifth individual win this year in only six events.
The Maize and Blue put two competitors among the top five in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Sophomore Amy McCullough (West Bloomfield, Mich./Mercy HS) was third with an NCAA consideration time of 16:42.19, and junior Emily-Clare Fenn (Westport, Mich./Staples HS) took fifth, spanning the 1,650-meter length with a consideration mark of 16:45.86.
Junior co-captain Anne Weilbacher (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales HS) rounded out Michigan's top-five appearances with her third-place result of 1:59.17 in the 200-yard butterfly. The NCAA consideration time was Weilbacher's first in the event this season.
The Maize and Blue is not scheduled to compete again until Jan. 3, 2003, when it races at the Rainbow Invitational in Honolulu, Hawaii, as part of its annual winter training trip. However, several members of the Wolverines squad will participate at the U.S. Open, held Dec. 5-7 by USA Swimming in Minneapolis, Minn.
