MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Junior co-captain Anne Weilbacher (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSalles HS) swam an Olympic Tryout-qualifying time in the 100-meter butterfly as one of four members of the University of Michigan women's swimming team to participate at the 2002 U.S. Open, held Thursday through Saturday (Dec. 5-7) at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center. Junior Emily-Clare Fenn (Westport, Conn./Staples HS), sophomore Amy McCullough (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Mercy HS), junior Kelli Stein (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Waterson HS) also swam for the Wolverines in the USA Swimming event.
| Weilbacher placed fourth in the 100-meter butterfly. |
Stein also had a successful weekend as she qualified for the "A" final of the 200-meter breaststroke. Her time of 2:37.45 in the finals was good enough for eighth place, surpassing the National cut and earning NCAA consideration in the process. Stein was also solid in her other event, the 100-meter breaststroke, with a 10th-place finish (1:13.31).
McCullough was the first Wolverine to compete on Thursday morning (Dec. 5) and posted the 10th-best time in the preliminary heats of the 400-meter freestyle at 4:20.77. In the final that night, McCullough finished in 14th at 4:24.46. The U-M sophomore was 33rd and 63rd, respectively, in competitive 800- and 200-meter freestyle events. Fenn joined McCullough in the 800-meter freestyle, placing 44th with a time of 9:19.01.
The Maize and Blue is not scheduled to compete again until Jan. 2, 2003, when it races at the Rainbow Invitational in Honolulu, Hawaii, as part of its annual winter training trip.
