CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team took first place in four of seven events Friday (Nov. 22) and the Wolverines are in a tight battle for second place after two days of the Nike Cup, hosted by North Carolina at Koury Natatorium. Sophomore Amy McCullough (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Mercy HS) earned the Wolverines' first NCAA automatic qualifying time of the year and the Maize and Blue set its second meet record in as many days during the 200-yard medley relay to lead U-M to 392 team points. With one day of competition remaining, the Wolverines are only half a point out of Virginia Tech's second-place position but trail No. 11 North Carolina by 312 points.
| McCullough bettered by 0.60 seconds the NCAA 200 freestyle A standard. |
Michigan's 200-yard medley relay squad of senior Erin Abbey (Highland Heights, Ohio/Mayfield HS), junior Kelli Stein (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Waterson HS), junior Anne Weilbacher (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales HS) and senior Laura Kaznecki (Wolverine Lake, Mich./Western HS) broke the Nike Cup's third record of the meet -- and the second for a Michigan entry -- with their NCAA consideration time of 1:41.47. The mark set a season best, only one second off automatic qualifying pace.
The Wolverines earned second place in the evening's other relay, the 800-yard freestyle, with their time of 7:24.03. In all U-M finished with consideration times in six of the day's seven finals.
Abbey, Weilbacher and Stein rounded out the Wolverines event titles with season-best performances. Abbey won the 100-yard backstroke with her consideration time of 55.17, a season best for the Michigan co-captain. Weilbacher took first place in the 100-yard butterfly super final at 54.20, while Stein's result of 1:02.26 in the 100-yard breaststroke was more than a one-second improvement over her previous fastest time this year.
The Wolverines will close out the final day of the Nike Cup tomorrow (Nov. 23) with preliminary events beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday's finals will commence at 6 p.m.
