U-M Concludes Fall at Big Ten Singles Championship

Junior Anthony Jackson (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet HS) and sophomore Michael Rubin (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic HS) earned victories in the first two rounds before falling to the No. 8 and No. 3 seeds, respectively. Sophomore Vinny Gossain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) had a strong showing at the tournament, posting a 3-1 record in the No. 7 and 8 players bracket.
Jackson opened the tournament by defeating Iowa's Hunter Skogman in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. After rolling through the second round with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Indiana's Tommy Bagnato, Jackson fell to Illinois' Chris Martin, 6-4, 6-4 in the round of 16.
Rubin also reached the third round, tallying victories over Wisconsin's Ward Bortz (6-2, 7-5) and Northwestern's Jackie Jenkins (6-0, 6-3). Rubin continued his impressive play into the next round before dropping a 7-6, 6-4 match to eventual runner-up Thomas Haug of Minnesota.
Gossain stormed through the consolation round, advancing to the final round by defeating Minnesota's Nate Feldman (6-2, 6-2), Wisconsin's Jeremiah Fuller (7-6, 6-3) and Iowa's Chaitu Malempati (6-4, 6-3). The final match was not played, as the team had to depart due to traveling arrangements.
Freshman Carey Rubin (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic) reached the finals of the No. 7 and 8 players bracket before losing 6-0, 6-2 to Penn State's Brad Nudell. He posted a 2-1 mark with victories over Wisconsin's Jeremiah Fuller (4-6, 7-5, 6-3) and Penn State's Clint Keithley (6-4, 6-2).
Senior co-captain Chris Shaya (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Saddlebrook Academy, Fla.) and junior Brett Baudinet (Rarotonga, Cook Islands/King's College) also picked up wins for the Maize and Blue.
