On the Fringe
Junior defender Kristi Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS) needs just two assists (to 18) to break into Michigan's career top 10. Gannon has recorded an assist in two of her last three appearances and has five this season, one shy of her career-high total as a freshman (6).
Player of the Week
Sophomore goalkeeper Molly Maloney (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest HS) earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors for the first time in her career after posting her second consecutive shutout in Michigan's 1-0 victory over No. 5 Michigan State last Friday (Oct. 4). The Spartans, which entered the game with the nation's longest winning streak at 10 games, were shutout for the first time in 2002, and came into the game leading the Big Ten in every offensive category. With Maloney's honor, four Michigan players have earned Big Ten Player of the Week awards. April Fronzoni and junior defender Stephanie Johnson (Houston, Texas/The Kinkaid School) received the league's offensive and defensive awards, respectively, on Sept. 9, while Molly Powers earned the offensive award on Sept. 16 and Sept. 30.
Slamming the Door
Molly Maloney has kept opponents scoreless for the last 173:09, which includes shutouts in her last two appearances as well as the last 33:09 of the 4-1 win over No. 19 Ohio State on Sept. 27. Maloney, who has 8.5 career blankings, including a career-high five this season, is just one shy of cracking U-M's top five single-season shutouts list. Maloney owns a record of 10-1 this season and has a career mark of 17-2.
Continuous Powers Surge
Molly Powers enters this weekend's games with goals in seven of her last eight games, including a marker in three straight appearances. Powers, whose 10 goals tie April Fronzoni for the team lead, has notched a career-high four game-winning goals this year to pace the squad, including the lone goal in Friday's (Oct. 4) 1-0 win over No. 5 Michigan State. Entering the 2002 campaign, Powers had five career GWGs.
IF YOU'VE BEEN WITH US ALL SEASON, THESE MAY LOOK FAMILIAR...
Home Sweet Home
The Wolverines are a perfect 9-0 this season at Ocker Field. Michigan has won the last 11 matches in front of its home crowd, dating back to last season's NCAA Regional. U-M captured all nine games during its school-record nine-game homestand from Sept. 7-Oct. 4.
Defending the Realm
The Wolverines own an 8-1 record in non-conference play this season and extended a win streak with their victory against Boston University. Michigan has not dropped a non-conference game to an opponent from another conference except the ACC since the 1999 campaign, posting 27 straight wins. U-M's last loss to a non-ACC opponent was on Sept. 12, 1999, when it dropped a 3-0 contest to James Madison. Michigan's next non-conference action is on Saturday, Oct. 12, when it faces Southwest Missouri State in Iowa City, Iowa.
Working Overtime
Michigan is 2-0 in overtime this season and has won the last five games that have gone into an extra stanza, dating back to last season. The Wolverines have played in at least two overtime games the last six years, including four during the 2001 campaign.
Down, But Not Out
Michigan has given up the game's first goal in five outings this season but has come back to win on four occassions, scoring multiple unanswered goals. Against Ball State on Sept. 8, U-M netted five straight goals to win by a 5-1 margin, while on Sept. 14 against No. 14 Boston College, the Wolverines scored six straight goals en route to a 6-2 win over the Eagles. In the Sept. 15 2-1 (ot) win over Connecticut, U-M notched two straight goals after falling behind, then repeated the feat in the 2-1 (ot) win against No. 12 Northeastern on Sept. 22.
