Streifler Wins Singles Flight at Wolverine Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Freshman Debra Streifler (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park HS) led an impressive showing by the University of Michigan women's tennis team at the 2002 Wolverine Invitational, held Friday through Sunday (Oct. 4-6) at the Varsity Tennis Center. Streifler won her first collegiate singles title, while every U-M player placed in her respective singles and doubles flight. The Wolverines compiled a 16-7 record in singles competition and won nine of their 11 doubles matches.
Junior Chrissie Nolan (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South HS) fell short in her bid for a third consecutive Wolverine Invitational "Blue" flight singles title, losing 6-3, 6-1 to Michigan State's Dora Vastag in the championship match. Nolan improved to 11-1 all-time at the tournament.
Fellow junior and doubles partner Kavitha Tipirneni (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Darby HS) also fell victim to Vastag, losing 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinals. Tipirneni placed fourth with a 2-2 record. Junior Kim Plaushines (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) finished eighth in the "Blue" flight. After opening with a first-round loss to Michigan State's Caroline Lay, senior Jen Duprez (Westhampton, N.Y./Westhampton Beach HS) battled back to win the backdraw with a 3-1 record.
Streifler steamrolled her way to the "Maize" singles flight championship, posting a 4-0 record and defeating Michigan State's Keri Thompson in the final (6-0, 6-4). Streifler yielded only eight games to her opposition in eight sets of competition.
Senior Joanne Musgrove (LaSalle, Ontario/Sandwich HS) won the singles round-robin with a 3-0 mark, and she later teamed with Streifler in the doubles round-robin to post a 4-0 record. Streifler led the team with an 8-0 overall tournament record, and Musgrove finished second with a 7-0 mark.
In doubles action, Duprez and Plaushines finished as the "Victors" doubles flight runner-up with a 3-1 record. The tandem reached the championship match in impressive fashion, winning 8-0, 8-1 and 8-2 to reach the final. Duprez and Plaushines lost a close 8-6 match to Michigan State's Lay and Vasta for the title. Nolan and Tipirneni placed fourth with a 2-2 record in other action in the bracket.
