DaCosta, Rutherford Fall in ITA Event Prequalifying

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- University of Michigan sophomore women's tennis players Michelle DaCosta (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne HS) and Leanne Rutherford (Calgary, Alberta/National Sports School) were unable to win first-round matches in singles or doubles and were eliminated from prequalifying action at the 2002 Riveria/ITA All-American Championship Sunday (Oct. 6).
DaCosta, seeded 11th in prequalifying competition, lost 7-6(6), 7-5 to Jackie Carleton of host UCLA. Rutherford won the opening set of her match before losing in a tough three-set match against Rice's Lauren Archer (2-6, 7-5, 6-1). In doubles action, DaCosta and Rutherford suffered a 9-7 setback to seventh-seeded Maureen Diaz and Anita Loyola of Southern California.
