Plaushines Advances to Main Draw at ITA Regional Meet

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- University of Michigan junior women's tennis player Kim Plaushines (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) advanced to the main draw of the 2002 ITA/Omni Hotels Midwest Regional Championships held at the MSU Tennis Facility with three consecutive singles victories today (Friday, Oct. 25). The Wolverines sent three individuals into qualifying competition with Plaushines moving through the draw to compete with five other teammates in the main draw starting later tonight.
Plaushines posted a 3-0 record with straight-set victories against Michigan State's Kate Thomas [6-3, 7-6(4)], Toledo's Monica Ribero [6-2, 7-5] and Eastern Michigan's Amella Lincaru [7-5, 6-4].
Freshman Debra Streifler (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park HS) came within a victory of advancing to the main draw. Streifler lost a three-set battle against Purdue's Swanna Zuccarine in the deciding match [6-1, 6-7, 7-6]. Streifler began the tournament with wins against Minnesota's Nischela Reddy [6-3, 6-0] and Bowling Green's Susie Schoenberger [3-6, 6-2, 6-1].
The only other Wolverine competing in the qualifying draw was senior Joanne Musgrove (LaSalle, Ontario/Sandwich HS), who lost a 6-1, 6-2 match against Indiana's Martina Grimm in the first round of competition.
