Michigan State sits atop the leaderboard by a single stroke after dropping 11 shots from the first round to the second with tallies of 290 and a six-under 278 for a 569 total. Xavier (282-288/570) sits a shot back and Miami (Ohio) is third at 573 (294-274). Xavier's Mile Malliet is the top individual with a four-under 138 total for 36 holes after back-to-back rounds of 69. St. John's Andrew Svoboda (73-66/139) and Michigan State's John Koskinen (71-68/139) are tied for the second position.
In his first round Nichols, who is tied for 13th with a 143 total, finished the first nine holes two under par with birdies on Nos. 2 and 7. He bogeyed No. 12 but followed with a birdie on No. 13 and parred out for an even-par back nine to finish with a two-under 69. In the second round he carded a three-over 74 after a couple of errant shots caused havoc on the round.
McIntosh, who is tied for 16th, opened with a three-over 74, but came roaring back with a one-under 70 in the second for a 144 total. Tighe carded a 76 in the first round but also came back with his one-under 70 for a 146 total, which is good for a tie for 22nd.
Freshman Christian Vozza (Traverse City, Mich./Grand Rapids Baptist HS) is tied for 74th after back-to-back rounds of 78 for a 156 total, and senior/junior Scott Carlton (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) is tied for 78th (79-78/157).
Senior/junior Chris Kellogg (Traverse City, Mich./Central HS) leads the Michigan individuals as he is tied for 34th after opening with a 77 but coming back strong with an even-par 71 in the second round for a 148 total.
In their first collegiate tournaments, freshmen Blake Burman (Miami, Fla./Palmetto HS) and Brandon Duff (Goodrich, Mich./Flint Powers Catholic HS) got off with shaky starts but responded in the second round as they are both tied for 69th. Burman carding an 82 in his first round as his putter let him down, but he fired a one-over 72 in the second round to tally a 154 two-round total. Duff opened his tournament with an 80 and came back with a 74 to also sit at 154.
Redshirt freshman Jimmy Wisinski (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) and freshman Bruce Svechota-Kingsbury (Ann Arbor, Mich./Greenhills School) are both tied for 85th at 159. QUOTES
Head Coach Andrew Sapp
On the first day of the tournament ... "I would still like to see consistency from our team. We seemed to have left a lot of shots out on the course today. We also made too many mental errors and really just bad shots on our home course, but there were some pleasant surprises. Dave's (Nichols) first round of 69 was pretty darn good. It is the second week in a row he has set a career best. Mark (McIntosh) and Rob (Tighe) played well in the second round ... so did some of our individuals. Again, we just need to get all the right scores to happen at the same time."
NOTES
• Junior Dave Nichols' first-round, two-under 69 is his career-best single-round score. His previous best tally was 70 fired last week in the first round at the Northern Intercollegiate (Sept. 28-29) and in the first round of the Kepler Intercollegiate (April 14-15, 2001).
• Junior/sophomore Rob Tighe's second-round score of one-under 70 set a new career best. It topped the 72 he fired in the final round of the Northern Intercollegiate (Sept. 28-29) a week ago.
• Redshirt freshman Mark McIntosh's second-round score of one-under 70 tied a career best. His score tied the final-round 70 he had at the Northern Intercollegiate (Sept. 28-29) a week ago.
