Game time is slated for 4 p.m. at Phyllis Ocker Field on the campus of U-M.
A Look at the Michigan State Series
Michigan and Michigan State will meet for the 53rd time on Friday (Oct. 4) with U-M leading the all-time series by a 26-20-6 margin. The Wolverines have won eight straight against the Spartans, including three in overtime, dating back to the 1997 campaign. Last season, U-M posted a 2-0 mark against MSU, downing the Spartans by identical 2-1 (ot) scores, including a victory in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. Michigan is 17-10-4 all-time against Michigan State in Big Ten action and owns a 12-8-3 record versus MSU in Ann Arbor.
Scouting Michigan State
Since falling to No. 2 Old Dominion by a 3-2 (ot) margin in their season opener, the Spartans have reeled off 10 straight wins C the longest current winning streak in the country. MSU opened up Big Ten play last weekend, defeating previously unbeaten and sixth-ranked Penn State, 3-0. Sophomore midfielder Annebet Beerman paces State offensively with her team-high 12 goals and 28 points, while sophomore forward Michelle Carstens and freshman forward Michelle Huynh-Ba have scored seven goals apiece. Sophomore back Judith van Haeringen ranks second in points with five goals and a team-high nine assists for 19 points, while senior midfielder Cynthia Martin is also a threat with six goals. Something's Got to Give
Michigan and Michigan State own the nation's two longest active winning streaks entering this week's battle. The Spartans have won 10 in a row to lead the nation, while the Wolverines have won eight straight and join Lafayette and Maine in a tie for the country's second longest string of wins. Following is a look at the nation's top five winning streaks heading into this week:

Michigan is averaging 21.7 shots per game while its opponents are posting 5.8 per contest.

On the Fringe
Junior defender Kristi Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS) needs just two assists (to 18) to break into Michigan's career top 10. Gannon has recorded an assist in each of her last two appearances and has five this season, one shy of her career-high total as a freshman (6).
A Perfect 10
April Fronzoni notched her team-high 10th goal of the season in Saturday's (Sept. 28) 3-0 win over Boston University, and has netted 10 or more goals in each of her three seasons with the Wolverines. After 10 appearances, Fronzoni is just three goals away from equaling her goal total from 21 games last season (13).
Sky's The Limit
Sophomore goalkeeper Molly Maloney (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest HS) recorded her career-high fourth shutout of the season in Saturday's (Sept. 28) 3-0 win over Boston University, surpassing the 3.5 she recorded in 2000. Maloney, who has 7.5 career blankings, is just two shy of cracking U-M's top five single-season shutouts list. Maloney also upped her record to 9-1, surpassing her win total from her freshman year, and has a career record of 16-2.
Powers Surge
Molly Powers has netted nine goals in her last seven games and has already surpassed her goal total from 22 games last season (8). Powers, who has three multi-goal games this season, is six markers shy of her career high of 15, set in 2000. In addition, Powers has netted a career-high three game-winning goals this year, one better than the two she notched as a freshman and sophomore in 1999 and 2000. Powers has been named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week twice this season -- the most in the Big Ten -- and nabbed the honor last week after scoring three goals in two games against No. 19 Ohio State and Boston University.
Welcome Back!
Sophomore forward Adrienne Hortillosa (Chula Vista, Calif./Bonita Vista HS) snapped a nine-game scoring drought with her first marker of the year in Saturday's (Sept. 28) 3-0 win over Boston University. Hortillosa, who has posted a career-high five assists during that span, netted seven goals in her first 10 games last season.
Oops!
It turns out that freshman defender Lori Hillman (Gibbsboro, N.J./Eastern Regional HS) is still looking for her first career assist. After reviewing the overtime goal against No. 12 Northeastern on Sept. 22, the assist to junior Stephanie Johnson's (Houston Texas/The Kinkaid School) goal came from junior midfielder Laura Woitkewitsch (Cologne, Germany).
Free Hits
Stephanie Johnson had a seven-game goal-scoring streak snapped in Saturday's (Sept. 28) 3-0 win over Boston University. Johnson, who has nine goals, is two shy of her career high of 11, set last season ... Senior midfielder Jessica Rose (Lititz, Pa./Warwick HS) notched her fourth goal of the season in Friday's (Sept. 27) 4-1 win over No. 19 Ohio State, surpassing her goal total from last year ... Sophomore defender Kate Dillon (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS) notched her first career assist against Ohio State ... Sophomore forward Anneke Huntzicker (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) has played in six games this season, one more than the total number of games she saw action in as a freshman. Huntzicker redshirted last year.
IF YOU'VE BEEN WITH US ALL SEASON, THESE MAY LOOK FAMILIAR...
Defending the Realm
The Wolverines own an 8-1 record in non-conference play this season and extended a win streak with their victory against Boston University. Michigan has not dropped a non-conference game to an opponent from another conference except the ACC since the 1999 campaign, posting 27 straight wins. U-M's last loss to a non-ACC opponent was on Sept. 12, 1999, when it dropped a 3-0 contest to James Madison. Michigan's next non-conference action is on Saturday, Oct. 12, when it faces Southwest Missouri State in Iowa City, Iowa.
Working Overtime
Michigan is 2-0 in overtime this season and has won the last five games that have gone into an extra stanza, dating back to last season. The Wolverines have played in at least two overtime games the last six years, including four during the 2001 campaign.
Down, But Not Out
Michigan has given up the game's first goal in five outings this season but has come back to win on four occassions, scoring multiple unanswered goals. Against Ball State on Sept. 8, U-M netted five straight goals to win by a 5-1 margin, while on Sept. 14 against No. 14 Boston College, the Wolverines scored six straight goals en route to a 6-2 win over the Eagles. In the Sept. 15 2-1 (ot) win over Connecticut, U-M notched two straight goals after falling behind, then repeated the feat in the 2-1 (ot) win against No. 12 Northeastern on Sept. 22.
Honors And Awards
The following is a list of honors and awards earned by players from the U-M field hockey team this season:
Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week
April Fronzoni -- Sept. 9
Molly Powers -- Sept. 16, Sept. 30
Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week

On Friday, Oct. 11, Michigan will return to Big Ten play, facing No. 13 Iowa at 3 p.m. CDT. U-M will conclude the weekend at noon CDT on Saturday, Oct. 12, with a non-conference matchup against Southwest Missouri State.
