Wolverines Place Seventh at Roy Griak Invitational

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan men's cross country team posted a seventh-place finish at the Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 29) as senior All-American Mark Pilja (Naperville, Ill./North HS) led the Wolverines with a fifth-place finish with a time of 24:18.2.
Dating back to last year, Pilja has finished in the top five of seven races, including a second-place finish last week (Sept. 21) at the Great American Cross Country Festival to teammate Alan Webb (Reston, Va./South Lakes HS), who did not run this week.
Two other Michigan runners finished in the top 30 overall among 312 runners. Senior All-American Mike Wisniewski (Temperance, Mich./Bedford HS) finished 19th (24:38.1) and sophomore Thomas Greenless (Milford, Mich./Milford HS) was 28th (24:57.9) as the Wolverines totaled 258 points as a team.
Only six out of 36 teams posted a better score than U-M, as No. 6-ranked Wisconsin won the team title with 129 points. No. 13 Portland (167) and No. 5 Providence (189) rounded out the top three.
Michigan's next meet will be on Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Murray Keatinge Invitational in Orono, Maine. The 8,000-meter men's race is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
