Last Week
U-M opened up the Big Ten season with a 2-1 overtime loss at Illinois (Sept. 21) and a 1-0 shutout over Iowa (Sept. 23). At Illinois, the Wolverines played strong throughout most of the game and got a goal from Laurie Peterson (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS), her first of the season. But U-M gave up a goal with just 40 seconds remaining in the second half to force the extra period. The overtime saw U-M with two scoring opportunities, but it was not able to capitalize. Illinois' Colleen Joyce scored both goals for the Fighting Illini. Iowa's conditions were less than ideal as the Maize and Blue had to contend with high winds and wet conditions. U-M's only goal in the 1-0 win was from Andrea Kayal (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills HS), who headed the ball in the back of the net after receiving a perfect corner kick from junior Amy Sullivant (Utica, Mich./Eisenhower HS). Goalkeeper Suzie Grech (Narbeth, Pa./The Shipley School) made four saves while facing 11 shots.
